It was great to see many of you at AGU last week. A busy week for us, but both the NOAA Data Management short course and Ignite@AGU (a few photos) were successful! Thanks to those of you that came to the ESIP co-sponsored events or helped spread the word.

ESIP Meeting Reminders: 
The ESIP Winter Meeting is January 8-10, 2013. The theme is ESIP Advancing Earth Science Information: From Climate Assessment to Intelligence to Action. 
  • Registration - Did you miss the early bird rate? One last chance through the end of this week with the code: AGU2012. There are student, teacher, remote and 1-day rates. 
  • The final agenda is posted with details about the sessions.
  • Posters/Demos - Posters should be 3'x4'. Posters and poster abstracts are submitted digitally to the ESIP Commons. All poster abstracts must be added by December 21 to be included in the printed program. Posters will be presented at the reception on Jan. 8 and images will scroll at the registration desk the entire length of the meeting. 
2013 Nominations for ESIP Leadership Positions: 
Each year, the ESIP Federation conducts elections of its officers, committee chairs and Administrative Committee members. For positions and descriptions or to make a nomination see the wiki page. Nominations are due by Dec. 15.  
Around the Federation: 

Leptoukh Lecture at AGU -  The Earth and Space Science Informatics Focus Group has established the new Leptoukh Lecture to recognize advances in these fields and their contributions to Earth and space science. Named in honor of the late Dr. Greg Leptoukh, a pioneer in satellite data quality and provenance, the Leptoukh Lecture aims to identify and support achievements in the computational and data sciences. This year, Chris Lynnes, gave the first Leptoukh lecture "Bridging Informatics and Earth Science: a Look at Gregory Leptoukh's Contributions". The lecture was filmed and available here
 


GCMD Software Release - The GCMD released software version 9.8.4. This release introduces two new features: (1) Extended Metadata and (2) Xpath Variables, which offer new capabilities in docBUILDER and the metadata records. Enhanced functionality was added to the Metadata Web Service (MWS) and the Keyword Management System (KMS) web service. [Job Opp] Information Research Manager, The University of New Mexico Department of Biology - The qualified individual will manage and maintain the integrated scientific system databases for the EMP, ensuring consistency and integrity of data by: coordinating the accumulation of data and metadata in a central repository in coordination with designated points of contact from the groups that participate in the EMP; designing and creating database(s); overseeing data processing and security; making data accessible to project scientists and other users; and implementing server side applications. The qualified individual will provide leadership, consultation, and expertise in the establishment and utilization of information retrieval programs, services, and systems to support research and/or educational activities within the EMP.
