Summer Meeting Sessions Due Today The Call for Sessions is now open! This Summer, ESIP will be gathering on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington, where 3 days of workshops, breakouts, and a couple great plenary talks will bring 300 Earth science data experts and data users together to solve problems and share the knowledge we've collected about the Earth system. Research as Art Call is OPEN The Call for Entries is open. You can submit your artwork HERE. Once again at this year’s ESIP Summer Meeting we'll hold a Research as Art event (on the evening of Wednesday, July 26). Our goal is to encourage the ESIP community to use visual media to communicate their data and research; and to think about their research as an ongoing narrative that can be told through visual media. This event is about showing how the ESIP community uses data. You don’t need to consider yourself an artist in order to submit a piece. The idea is to have a range of entries that show the diversity of research done by members of our community, as well as their creativity and the impact of their work, in an engaging and accessible way.
Registration for the ESIP 2017 Summer Meeting is OPEN Early registration (through June 30, 2017) is $415 for members and $550 for non-members. After June 30, the registration fee rises to $515 for members and $650 for non-members. The student registration fee is $150 (This does not go up). A special one-day rate is available for $200. A full refund will be given until June 30. No refunds will be issued for canceled registration after June 30. Register here.
Funding Requests for External Speakers Due Today
As you are planning your summer meeting sessions — a limited amount of funding is available to support external speakers for breakout sessions at the ESIP Summer meeting. Session organizers at ESIP Winter and Summer meetings may request travel support for guest speakers at their sessions, provided these speakers are recognized experts in their fields and are not associated with an ESIP member organization - people who wouldn’t normally attend and who will add real value to the session. Total travel funding for this purpose will not exceed $1000 per Committee, Working Group, Cluster or other session organizer. In addition, meeting registration for guest speakers will be waived.
Travel funding requests should identify session and speaker(s); describe speaker’s expertise, value to session, sponsoring cluster, working group or committee, and ESIP as a whole; and relevance to the meeting theme. Requests should also identify how the guest speaker’s expertise will be shared with ESIP community members who are not able to attend the session, for example:
Presentation will be recorded and posted on ESIP web site for others to access.
Speaker or session organizer will post a blog about the session on the ESIP web site.
If more travel funds are requested than are available, funds will be allocated to session organizers by lottery. Meeting registration for up to 10 session speakers who do not receive travel support or who are local to the meeting area may also be waived.
Raskin Scholarship In March 2012, the ESIP Federation lost long-time member, Rob Raskin. Rob was soft-spoken, easy-going, wise and an Earth science information partner extraordinaire. Rob was a mentor to many aspiring Earth science data professionals. In collaboration with Rob’s family, the ESIP Federation and the Foundation for Earth Science remember Rob and his dedication to support the next generation of Earth science data and technology leaders through the Robert G. Raskin Scholarship.
The Raskin scholarship is awarded annually to a current graduate or post-graduate student in the Earth or computer sciences who has an interest in community evolution of Earth science data systems. Drone Cluster Activity The Drone Cluster just had a kickoff at RDA sUAS Data IG meeting which is a direct result of the ESIP Drone Cluster. The cluster has a blog out on the space, and has begun an experiment in global communication by starting a Github wiki for sUAS metadata standards development

Around the Federation Less than a Month to Submit AGU Fall Meeting Sessions You have less than a month left to submit a Fall Meeting session proposal. Take advantage of the opportunity to shape the scientific program. All fields of scientific interest will be well-represented in New Orleans at the most influential gathering of Earth and space scientists in the world. SESYNC Summer Institute Socio-Environmental Synthesis involves bringing together existing data, methods, and tools from different disciplines, which can sometimes present challenges. The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center's (SESYNC's) cyberinfrastructure program provides the human and computing resources needed to overcome these challenges.
