The Pedaler Newsletter
Welcome to fall. Start searching for your arm warmers!
We've got some great rides planned for this weekend. On Saturday, you can challenge yourself the with rolling hills in the Bullis County Park
ride. Sunday calls for a nice ride in Castroville
. Please try to make it out to one of the rides.
We need bicycle seats!
Our club has an ongoing project to fix children's bicycles at a local homeless shelter. We need a number of seats for children's bikes to complete the project. Any color is OK as long as the seat is in good shape. If you would like to contribute a seat, please contact Cliff Hickel at 210-957-0464.
New Berlin Ride
On October 9th
, we'll start a ride in New Berlin. Yes, the ride starts and ends at a favorite refueling station, Britzke's Restaurant! It's essentially a reverse of the popular Woman Hollering Creek Ride--with a few new twists. Please make plans to join us for the ride and post-ride lunch.
Cibolo Ride's New 52-mile route
The next Cibolo ride is scheduled for October 22nd
. We've had a new 52-mile route in place for a couple of months. However, most of the veterans of the old 52-mile route haven't tried the new one. It's a great route and I plan to lead the 18+ MPH riders on the new route in October. The route features three potential refueling locations: New Berlin, La Vernia, and St. Hedwig. More importantly, this new route has the one characteristic that we expect of any Cibolo ride--a fairly flat route that provides all riders with an opportunity to do some hammering! You can view the route and download the map on our website
2011 San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon
This year, the 2011 Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon and 1/2 Marathon will be adding a cycling tour. We are in need of 20 volunteers to help at the cycle tour finish-line area. The volunteers' shift will be on November 13 from 6 AM to 10 AM. We also need Ride Marshals. Please contact JD Simpson at JD@sabikeshare.com
if you are interested in being a volunteer or Ride Marshal.
Bicycle Safety Day
The Wheelmen have been asked to help with a bicycle safety day at Fernandez Elementary School at 1 PM on Saturday, October 15th. We need 2-3 club members to help with helmet fitting and bicycle safety inspections. This is a great way to get the future generation of cyclists to learn to ride safely. If you can help, please contact Cliff Hickel at 210-957-0464.
If you would like to help with helmet fitting for a Bike Rodeo at Universal City ISD's Rose Garden Elementary, please contact Jeannette Burris at 361-701-5369.
BMAC's "Bike Night Meeting"
October's Bicycle Mobility Advisory Committee (BMAC) meeting is an evening Bike Night Meeting! Doors open on October 12th at 6 PM. Light refreshments will be available and you will have an opportunity to speak with committee members. The meeting starts at 6:30 PM. As always, bicycle parking is provided. Soldier Ride San Antonio
Wounded Warrior Project's 2011 Soldier Ride, presented by GEICO, arrives in San Antonio around Veteran's Day this year. Soldier Ride is a cycling event to help wounded warriors restore their physical and emotional well-being. This event also raises awareness for our nation's wounded warriors who battle the physical and psychological damages of war and gives the public a chance to ride alongside and honor these men and women. The Soldier Ride will take place in San Antonio on November 12. We would love to have your support in riding alongside the warriors or spreading the word about the event. Please register
to ride and support this great cause!
Rider Education Series
Road Riding 201 will meet on four consecutive Saturdays from October 22nd
to November 3rd
. The weather will be cool so this is a good time to have your non-riding spouse, significant other or a friend get started cycling. See the Advocacy and Education section of the Wheelmen web site for additional information on class content and rides. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org
to register for either class (taking both classes is even better).
New Wheelmen Jersey
The latest Wheelmen jersey has the same great design, but more lightweight material and a reduced price--$55! Please contact Vicki Smith
As you know, SAW rides would not go off as well as they do without members who step up and volunteer to be ride leaders. If you have considered being a ride leader, now is the ideal time to volunteer. Don’t be concerned about what’s involved in being a ride leader. The responsibility is relatively painless and primarily involves showing up early at rides to post the maps, setting out the sign-up sheets, and conducting a pre-ride briefing. We also offer ride leader training. If you lead four rides during the year, your annual SAW membership is free! To join this group of volunteers critical to the success of our club, contact our Ride Committee Chair, Tom Manning
via e-mail or phone at 210-496-2351.
Your Opinion Matters!
We are always looking for feedback on how we can improve the club. Please feel free to e-mail your suggestions to Tony Beauford
