The Pedaler:  January 2013

The Pedaler Newsletter

I hope Santa brought you some great cycling goodies over the holidays. Undoubtedly, there were some cycling computers, wheels, saddles, arm warmers, gloves, jerseys,  shorts, or socks under some of the Christmas trees in the local area.  The Assos Chamois Creme that I received will certainly be used throughout the year!

2012 was another great year for cycling in the local area.  We added a new location, Adkins-Junction, to our list of rides, updated some of our routes, and created new maps.  We also started offering GPS files for some of our rides.  The Easter Hill Country Tour was another success and many of us had great experiences in this year's Tour de Cure, Hotter'n'Hell 100, Katy Flatland, MS Ride to the River, or Tour de Gruene.

We also had a few cycling tragedies and serious accidents.  The San Antonio cycling community came together for the "Can you see me now?" ride and fundraiser.  As always, we must maintain vigilance when we are on the road.

We do have a ride scheduled for New Year's Day.  Maybe the cycling gods will smile on us with dry weather.

Happy New Year!

President's Column
Welcome to 2013!   In my first column as club president, I would like to thank Cliff Hickel (we won’t let you go too far) and all the departing board members for their valuable contributions to the club.  The board, committee chairs, and our members appreciate your willingness to take time out of your busy schedules in order to make our club a success.

One of the main topics in every board meeting is member retention.  I believe that all members can play a role in retaining members.  A few years ago when I moved to San Antonio, I searched on-line for potential rides around the city.  That’s when I discovered the San Antonio Wheelmen website.  The very next Saturday, I showed up at Bullis County Park for the club’s scheduled ride.

After a few miles of riding, I joined a small group that included another new cyclist and two former board members.  I was feeling really good and naively proposed that we should take the longer route that included a climb up Rebecca’s Creek.  Shortly thereafter, I ran out of gas and was dropped.  Since I did not know the route, I was a little concerned.  However, two club members were waiting for me at the end of the climb.  I was extremely satisfied with the ride.  Those “club riders” had waited for me, and by doing so, they gave me motivation to keep coming back and to get in better shape.  I was hooked!

Please be friendly to new riders and try to make their first interaction with the Wheelmen a great experience.

The club will be hosting Easter Hill Country Tour 2013, one of the premier cycling events in Texas.  EHCT provides participants with three days of great roads, challenging terrain, and beautiful scenery. Registration is open at

Founded in 1974 by the Lubbock Bicycle Club, the Easter Hill Country Tour is hosted in rotation by the San Antonio Wheelmen, Austin Cycling Association, Houston Bicycle Club, and the Fort Worth Bicycling Association.  Early-bird registration is $45 through February 28th.  We need a lot of volunteers in order to make the event a wonderful experience for all participants. Please contact Tom Manning to determine how you can help.  Let’s make the 40th edition of EHCT a special one!
Finally, the sport of cycling that we love is a very fulfilling one, but it’s not risk-free.  Last November, during one of our scheduled rides, one of our members, Reed Lee, was seriously injured.  His injuries will require extensive treatment and therapy that will not be fully covered by his insurance.  We have set up a fund, the Reed Lee Benefit Fund, to help offset some of those expenses.  Please find it in your heart to help out another cyclist by going to the link below and donating to his fund.
I hope everybody will receive 2013 with tailwinds and slightly moderate downhill roads!
