A LUTA CONTINUA: Our 500-Year Fight Continues

As an organization led by people of color, we at ABADA-Capoeira Bronx (ACBX) stand in solidarity and ongoing support with our black and brown brothers and sisters. The murder of George Floyd and deaths of countless people of color dating back hundreds of years across North and South America must not be in vain. ACBX condemns these unrelenting attacks on black and brown people and the systemic injustice that many people in our community face every day.

Our unique art form was created by enslaved people seeking to express their unrelenting humanity in the face of violence and oppression. The historical context has perhaps shifted but our essential struggle for equality and humanity continues to this day.  This is something we have always had very present in our work. We maintain our commitment to our sustained practice of Capoeira as a medium to develop youth, build community, and inspire all people to reach their full potential. We reiterate our commitment to draw from the peaceful principles and values rooted in the practice of Capoeira to support our community.   We will continue to celebrate Afro-Brazilian arts as a means to nurture empathy, tolerance, and social-awareness in each of our students.

Recently our work has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but we continue to share our art form digitally, and remain in touch with our community of capoeiristas.  We continue to share our experiences, strengthen our spirits and raise our conscience in unison in both words and actions.  The art of Capoeira was born out of the need to fight for freedom and justice. Capoeira is our ongoing effort for peace, our shared resilience and our productive resistance. Capoeira is our 500-year old fight for justice, freedom, and equality.  From enslaved Africans in Brazil, to the Bronx, to the world, “A Luta Continua” (the fight continues).

ACBX AND THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC UPDATES
We continue to work under much uncertainty which makes it a challenge to put together a plan of action for the upcoming months. However, we want to share with you a quick rundown of what our summer plans and beginning of Fall look like as of now, knowing that things may change:

  • We will continue to offer live-streamed classes via zoom. We are trying our best to improve the experience each day.
  • It is likely Zoom classes will continue to be offered in the Fall. Our ability to continue with our space lease is uncertain.
  • If allowed, we will host some outdoor classes, following all social-distancing guidelines. Still providing the option to take the class via zoom, for those who may not feel comfortable being outdoor. We will communicate this with enrolled students.
  • Sadly, our Summer Camp 2020 has been cancelled. Any families registered for camp will receive a credit toward an ACBX program or a full refund. If we have not contacted you yet, we will shortly! However, feel free to contact us anytime.
  • ACBXKIDS classes will continue during July and August. The current session ends June 27. The summer session will run July 2 - August 22 (no class July 4), with a reduced schedule of classes on Saturdays. A dedicated ACBXKIDS Summer Session email will be sent next week.
  • ACBXKIDS classes will be on a break, August 23 - September 11. Adults/Teens classes will remain in session with a reduced schedule.
  • The ACBXKids Fall session will start Saturday, September 12.

We cannot thank you enough for your support and understanding during these challenging times. We deeply appreciate having many of you in our virtual classes, and/or checking in on ACBX. Please continue to stay in touch - whether you are able to take class or not at this time,
ACBX is here, with you!
