Smooth and sophisticated, like Lando Calrissian of Star Wars, is what came to mind when I tasted today’s wine. In fact I am anointing it the Lando Calrissian of Loire Valley reds! Why not?
The wine is 100% Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley region of Saumur Champigny vinified by Le Petit Saint Vincent. This small domaine, only 13 hectares of vines, specializes in Cabernet Franc and it shows in this bottling. They have been farming organically since 1990 while also practicing low-intervention in the cellar. The goal is to craft fresh, bright expressions of the varietal which has clearly been achieved.
There is no oak barrel manipulation, only concrete and stainless steel is used during fermentation, as a result you have a pure look at what Cabernet Franc is and can be. This wine is stunning right out of the gate but also opens up subtly enticing you to return to the bottle for that next glass.
I cannot talk this wine up enough! It is seamless, compelling and yes, smooth and sophisticated. The QPR for this wine also happens to be off the charts. There are stores selling this for $26-$27 a bottle and understandably, it is phenomenal at that price never mind our low sale price of only $19.97!
This is an absolute no-brainer for Cabernet Franc fans, medium-bodied red fans, organic red fans, or just wine fans in general! Unfortunately our supply is limited, so don’t sleep or you will miss out on the Lando Calrissian of the Loire!

This is a transparent expression of the magic that happens when well-farmed Cabernet Franc is in the hands of a low-interventionist. The bouquet is bright and fresh without a strong greenness that can occur in Cabernet Franc. The body of the wine displays dark black cherry and plum notes with a subtle hint of peppercorn. Good acidity provides lift while soft but present tannins add to the overall structure. This is really well balanced from beginning to end. This Cabernet Franc is a food wine, yes, but hard to resist on it’s own. Bravo!
