Who doesn’t love a cold glass of bubbly? Nothing else starts a party like the sound of a cork popping, but sparkling wine is no longer just for special occasions. Life itself is the celebration, so pop that bottle on a quiet night in as well at your family get togethers.
Today we have a spectacular bottle of bubbly on special from Marques de Gelida. Their vintage dated Gran Reserva Cava is a dynamite wine for twenty dollars, and today you can purchase it for only $15.97! Cava is Spain’s answer to Champagne, and this one is produced in the traditional ‘Champagne method’ (méthode Champenoise). The ultimate standout for this method is the in-bottle secondary fermentation that produces the bubbles we all know and love.
Marques de Gelida, who is based in Penedes just outside of Barcelona, has selected their best vineyard of each varietal for this wine. The final blend consisting of 35% Xarel·lo, 25% Macabeo, 20% Parellada, and 20%Chardonnay.
This is no mass produced budget Cava but the real deal Methode champenoise bubbly. No corners are cut producing this Gran Reserva. Rapid entry into the cellar by gravity. Gentle press with 50% extraction of free-run juice. Each variety is fermented in small tanks at controlled temperature. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle.
Perfect as an aperitif, or served with seafood, sushi, white meats (yes, turkey), and creamy cheeses.

Coming from older vines, the 2015 Gelida Brut Gran Reserva is a blend of 35% Xarel·lo, 25% Macabeo, 20% Parellada, and 20%Chardonnay that spent 40 months on lees before bottling. Its more golden color is followed by beautiful notes of golden apples, orange blossom, brioche, and honeysuckle. It's rich, has a beautiful depth of fruit, good purity, and a clean finish. It's another terrific, richer example of Cava to drink over the coming 4-6 years.
