I am starting to think we might have a problem. We cannot get enough of Beaujolais! That delicious fresh fruit medley that only Gamay can provide has us hooked. Take today’s wine for example, Domaine des Marrans Aux Cotes Chiroubles 2019 is irresistible!
Domaine des Marrans is located in Fleurie in the heart of the northernmost section of Beaujolais, however, today’s wine is from Chiroubles. Founded in 1970, the current proprietor is the young and talented Mathieu Mélinand, who joined the family domaine in 2008. With old vines and crystalline granite sites, Mathieu is growing some of the most pristine Gamay we know.
The vines are farmed organically and are pruned in the traditional Gobelet vine training method and the harvest is done only by hand, using small crates to minimize oxidation. In the cellar, vinification is old school, with semi-carbonic maceration using whole clusters, minimal intervention, and only indigenous yeasts used. The wines are then aged in large older barrels for 10 months before bottling. The Chiroubles is remarkably pure and fresh, with a grain and spice to the old vine Gamay that underlines quality terroir Mathieu is working with. Domaine des Marrans’ wines display their terroir with clear definition and racy floral deliciousness.

Brilliant violet. Bright and sharply focused on the nose, displaying spice-tinged red berry, cherry and floral scents and a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Appealingly sweet and focused on the palate, offering intense raspberry, bitter cherry and star anise flavors that deepen on the back half while maintaining energy. The floral note comes back on the lively, gently tannic finish, which hangs on with strong tenacity.
