Mathematician Wins NSF CAREER Award

Ching-Shan ChouChing-Shan Chou, assistant professor, mathematics, received an NSF CAREER Award, the top award for outstanding junior faculty members whose work shows promise of significant ongoing contributions to their field. Chou is a mathematical biologist who works to understand basic cell-to-cell communication. Her proposal integrates research plans with educational initiatives and involves an undergraduate training program, a graduate working group, and mentoring PhD students.



Economic Growth Linked with Poor Health

Richard SteckelRichard Steckel, Distinguished University Professor, economics, anthropology, and history, is author of a new study finding that the American surge in the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is concentrated in the South and can be partially traced to the area’s rapid economic growth between 1950 and 1980. Steckel’s research is published in the July/August issue of the American Journal of Human Biology.
 


Ann Hamilton Addresses Graduates at Summer Commencement

Ann HamiltonAnn Hamilton, Distinguished University Professor, art, gave the commencement address at Ohio State’s summer-term commencement Sunday, August 4. Approximately 1,750 students received degrees.

Chinese Flagship Students Receive Full Scholarships to Study in China 

Chinese Flagship Students Receive Full Scholarships to Study in China
All seven of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures’ current China Flagship Program students received full scholarships from the Chinese Scholarship Council to study in China. The scholarships cover tuition, lodging, medical care, learning materials, and living allowance for the 2013-14 academic year. The following students will study, in Chinese, in their respective areas of interest: Bradley Roberts, the Central Academy of Fine Art (Chinese present art); Cassandra Olson, Peking University (international relations); Erin Elsbernd, Renmin University of China (marketing); Emma Karp, Sun Yat-Sen University (health care); Michael Portier, Renmin University of China (law); Joseph Sarver, Jilin University (corporate management); and Sterling Weiser, Xiamen University (social medical care and health management).

Ohio State’s Web Login Service (Web Single Sign On) page has a new look. Functionality isn’t changing, but the revised page looks better and resizes for mobile devices. Support Team ASC and Pelotonia 13

Arts and sciences faculty, staff, and students are participating in Pelotonia 13, this Saturday and Sunday, to raise funds for cancer research. The Pelotonia Fellowship Program and Pelotonia Idea Grants fund a number of arts and sciences faculty, post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate student research projects, directly benefiting cancer patients.
