John Beacom Named APS Fellow

John BeacomJohn Beacom, professor of physics and astronomy and director of the Center for Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (CCAPP) was elected an American Physics Society (APS) Fellow for 2013. A fellowship election is a distinct honor because the evaluation process is done entirely by one's professional peers. Beacom was nominated by the APS Division of Nuclear Physics, and was cited "for his comprehensive work on the diffuse supernova neutrino background and for his wide-ranging work in neutrino astrophysics, which is directed at finding new sources and using their detections to prove neutrino properties and the physical conditions in the astrophysical sources."
 


Eight ASC Researchers Named 2013-2014 U.S. Fulbright Scholars

Ohio State topped the list of national research institutions awarded Fulbright Scholars for 2013-14 with 14 recipients. Eight ASC scholars from diverse disciplines are among those selected to further their studies abroad during 2013-14: Carol Boram-Hays, lecturer, art history; Philip Brown, professor, Japanese and East Asian history; Alcira Dueñas, associate professor, history; Lisle Gibbs, professor; evolution, ecology and organismal biology; Stephen Petrill, professor, psychology; Anil Pradhan, professor, astronomy; Ana Elena Puga, assistant professor, theatre; Linn Van Woerkom, associate provost, director, University Honors & Scholars, professor of physics.

 



Ohio State Alumnus R.L. Stine Gives Autumn Commencement Address

R.L. StineGoosebumps series author R.L. Stine encouraged Ohio State graduates to seize opportunities in life during his address at the 2013 Ohio State Autumn Commencement ceremony Sunday, December 15. Stine is an Ohio State alumnus (1965, English) and Bexley native, and was honored with an Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2012.

ASC Tech suggests using CarmenConnect for online office hours. Send students your CarmenConnect link and the times you’ll be online; then meet them online with this university-supported, cross platform system to discuss their work. AWARDS

Beckman Wins Research Award

Mary BeckmanMary Beckman, professor, linguistics, won the Anneliese Maier Research Award from the Alexander von Humbolt Foundation, for internationally recognized scientific achievements. Beckman will spend up to five years cooperating on a long-term research project with colleagues in Germany. The award is for 250,000 EUR.
 


Roberts, Tonhauser Win Linguistic Society of America Award

Professors Craige Roberts and Judith Tonhauser (with David Beaver and Mandy Simons) received the Linguistic Society of America's Best Paper in Language Award, for, "Toward a taxonomy of projective content" (Language 89.1, 2013). The award is given for the best paper published in the journal in any given year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Network Maintenance

ASCTech will be performing some maintenance to the core Arts and Sciences network on Sunday, December 22, beginning at 8 pm. The team will work overnight and expects to be completed by 4 am. During the 8 pm-4 am window, individuals will experience brief, intermittent delays in emails, web page loads, etc., but no service is scheduled to be completely offline the entire time.

Staff Professional Development Grants

College of Arts and Sciences staff members are encouraged to apply for professional development funding through an ASC Staff Professional Development Grant. Application deadline is Friday, January 17.
 


Outreach and Engagement Nominations 

The offices of Outreach and Engagement, International Affairs, Student Life and Undergraduate Education, and the Service Learning Initiative, have joined together to recognize faculty, staff and students with the University Outreach and Engagement Recognition Awards program. Awards will be presented in the community engagement, international engagement, service learning, staff, student, student group and community partner categories. Nominations due February 14, 2014. 

 



Coca-Cola Critical Difference for Women Research Grants 

Faculty Grants for Research on Women, Gender, & Gender Equity:
  • Open to all full-time, regular Ohio State faculty
  • Grant amount: up to $4,000 for the term July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015
Graduate Student Grants for Projects on Women, Gender, & Gender Equity:
  • Open to all Ohio State PhD candidates working on dissertations and students in a terminal MA or MFA/MBA program working on creative projects or theses
  • Grant amount: up to $1,200 for the term July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015
