Center for Folklore Studies Leads
Appalachian Project

Krista Bryson, PhD candidate, English; Patricia Cunningham, director, social change, Office of Student Life; and Cassie Patterson, assistant director, Center for Folklore Studies, received a $15,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Appalachia for their project, The Appalachian Project, Ohio: How I Got to College. The interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff, and students is conducting fieldwork at Ohio State and in Ohio counties to learn from community members about the factors shaping the life choices of young people in the region, especially in relation to higher education. The project focuses on college students from the region: how they get to college, their strategies for negotiating the college experience, and their destinations afterward.
Alumnus Receives Tony Honor
 Ohio State alumnus Peter Lawrence (BA, speech, 1966) received a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre, June 8, at the Tony Awards Ceremony. Lawrence has worked as a production stage manager and assistant director on more than 20 Broadway shows, including the current Annie, along with Shrek, the Musical; Spamalot; Gypsy; and Annie Get Your Gun. He teaches at Columbia University, and has written a textbook about stage management.
Karl Whittington Receives Millard Meiss Publication Grant
 A new book by Karl Whittington, assistant professor, history of art, has been awarded a Millard Meiss Publication Fund grant of $8,500.

ASC Staff Advisory Council (SAC) Update
The College of Arts and Sciences and SAC are pleased to announce staff selected to join the council for the term 2013-2015, beginning in July.
New SAC members are: Emily Carpenter, academic counselor, ASC advising; Andy Cavins, office associate, women’s, gender and sexuality studies; Gwyn Dalton, department manager, history of art; Teresa England, office associate, statistics; Patricia Longbrake, administrative associate, physics; Arnay Tate, administrative associate, physics; Matthew Turner, academic counselor, ASC advising; and Kristina Ward, administrative associate, history.
They join continuing SAC members (through 2014): Melinda Bogarty, department manager, African American and African studies; Elizabeth Freeman, graduate program coordinator, anthropology; Ruth Friedman, undergraduate studies program manager, English; Judy Manley, graduate program coordinator, Spanish and Portuguese; Ashley Sweaney, academic advisor, psychology; Shu-Wen Tsai, administrative associate, comparative studies, Kim York, HR manager, psychology.
