Arts and Sciences Staff Member Selected for Distinguished Staff Award
Darry Andrews, director, Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center (MSLC), was recognized with the university’s 2013 Distinguished Staff Award for exceptional accomplishment, leadership, and service to the university. In the eight years Andrews has been with the MSLC, he has made an impact on the growth and expansion of the tutoring system and reshaped how math is taught to students.
International Spatial Statistics Conference at Ohio State, June 5-7
 Ohio State’s Department of Statistics co-sponsors the second international Spatial Statistics Conference Wednesday—Friday in the Ohio Union. Professor and Chair Mark Berliner, Department of Statistics, is a member of the conference scientific advisory board. Kate Calder, associate professor, statistics, is a conference organizer. Geography Professor Ola Ahlqvist is presenting research done with colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh. Researchers from the University of Cambridge, UK; University of Montreal, Canada; Texas State University; Emory University; and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China will give keynote addresses.
Psychology Professor Finds Men and Women Lie about Sex to Match Gender Expectations
Terri Fisher, professor, psychology, Mansfield campus, is author of a new study showing that men and women lie about their sexual behavior to match the expectations of gender stereotypes.
Fisher’s research is published in the journal Sex Roles.
Jodi Ford, assistant professor, nursing, is lead author of a new study finding adolescents living in a poor neighborhood are at an increased risk of getting the sexually transmitted infection (STI) chlamydia in young adulthood. Ford conducted the research with Christopher Browning, professor, sociology.

Molecular Geneticist Receives Idea Grant
Amanda Simcox, professor, molecular genetics; and Victor Jin, assistant professor, biomedical informatics, received a multiyear Idea Grant funded primarily by money raised through Pelotonia, for their research project, Gene Discovery Using a Drosophila Tumor Model. These multiyear research grants for creative approaches to understanding and curing cancer help teams of scientists initiate projects that can later attract larger external grants.
ASC Students Awarded 2013 Presidential Fellowships
The Presidential Fellowship is the top award given by Ohio State’s Graduate School to recognize outstanding scholarly accomplishments and future potential of graduate students entering the final phase of dissertation research or terminal degree project. These arts and sciences students received 2013 fellowships: William Cole, physics; Veronica Dittman Stanich, dance; Matthew Hitt, political science; Mira Kafantaris, English; Jingwei Li, chemistry; Brian Maxwell, biophysics; Brian Murphy, comparative studies; Mark Patrick, physics; Matthew Hunter Price, history; Daniel Vandersommers, history; and Xiaolin Zhu, geography.

MALCS 2013 Summer Institute: Registration Deadline, June 30
 Ohio State hosts the annual gathering of MALCS: Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (Women Active in Letters and Social Change), Wednesday, July 17 – Saturday, July 20. This year’s theme is ¡Aquí Estamos! / We Are Here!: Movements, Migrations, Pilgrimage and Belonging. This is only the fourth time in its 30-year history that MALCS has been held in the Midwest.
