Anthropology Professor on Migration and Remittances
Jeffrey Cohen
Jeffrey Cohen, associate professor of anthropology and a leading expert on migration and its effects in developing countries, is editor of a World Bank report analyzing how remittances and mirgrant worker behavior were affected by the economic crisis of 2008. The report, Migration and Remittances during the Global Financial Crisis and Beyond, was unveiled last week at the World Bank.

Linguistics Student Receives Boren Fellowship

Linguistics graduate student Jane Mitsch has been awarded a Boren Fellowship for her studies in Senegal. Mitsch will spend Spring Semester 2013 in Senegal doing dialectal research, investigating how the political border, a colonial legacy that divides francophone Senegal from anglophone Gambia, affects the way the Wolof people speak in that area.
Exhibition and Performance: Bebe Miller

The Urban Arts Space and Wexner Center for the Arts both offer points of entry to the work of choreographer Bebe Miller, faculty member in the Department of Dance and artistic director of the Bebe Miller Company. On view August 23-September 29 at the Urban Arts Space is the exhibition Bebe Miller:Tracing History; it will complement the world premiere of the Bebe Miller Company’s work, A History, September 27-30 at the Wexner Center.

Urban Arts Space Call for Proposals
The Urban Arts Space is opening its annual call for proposals and invites local, regional, national, and international artists and artist groups to submit ideas for open exhibition time-slots for spring and summer 2013. Deadline for proposals is September 14.

Artists in the Garden

On Friday, July 20, ten artists will be allowed access to the downtown Lazarus building's Rooftop Garden to create new works of art at the inaugural meeting of Artists in the Garden. The Urban Arts Space invites artists to create work using the inspiring view of Columbus from the garden. 

History Alumni and Friends World War II Tour
Sixteen alumni and friends of the history department and faculty guides Professors Peter Hahn, Peter Mansoor and David Steigerwald, concluded a tour of European World War II sites this week. From London to Normandy to Paris and Berlin, travelers experienced an abbreviated version of the World War II study tour that undergraduates will take next spring when the department launches its new WWII European Study-Tour Program. The Alumni and Friends Tour aimed to raise awareness and support for this unique academic program, which will provide unparalleled learning opportunities for undergraduates.

Saturday, July 21:
Silk Road Ensemble
, led by Persian ethno-musicologist and historian Shahyar Daneshgar, performs traditional music of Central Asia from 1 to 4 pm in the Ohio Union U.S. Bank Conference Theatre. Free and open to the public.This event is part of the NEH-funded Central Asia in World History Summer Institute for high-school teachers, July 15-27. Read more
