39th Annual Jazz Festival

The School of Music is celebrating jazz, America’s art form, with four days of faculty and student ensemble performances, jazz headliner and jazz days featuring visiting college and high school jazz bands. The event will run from March 31 to April 3 in Weigel Auditorium. See the schedule of events for more information on the five events being hosted. All performances are free and open to the public.

Schedule of Events:

Ohio State Jazz Ensemble                                                     March 31, 8 p.m. 

The Ohio State Jazz Ensemble, directed by Kris Keith, opens the 39th Annual Ohio State Jazz Festival with music of North and South America. Join the musical journey featuring music by Astro Piazzolla (Argentina), Dori Cyammi and Moacir Santos (Brazil), Mario Bauzá (Cuba), as well as well-known American bebop and swing classics. The program also features School of Music Audio Engineer Mark Rubinstein on accordion.

Faculty: The Ohio Jaztet                                                           April 1, 8 p.m. 

Comprised of jazz faculty members Shawn "Thunder" Wallace, saxophone and flute; Anthony Stanco, trumpet; Kevin Turner, guitar; Andy Woodson, bass; and Jim Rupp, drums, The Ohio Jaztet will present progressive arrangements and original charts.

College Jazz Band Day                                              April 2, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

A college jazz band invitational featuring all Ohio State jazz combos, the Jazz Lab Ensemble, the Jazz Workshop Ensemble and guests.

Jazz Festival Headliner: Quamon Fowler, saxophone            April 2, 8 p.m. 

Texas saxophonist Quamon Fowler (pictured), artist-in-residence, will be featured with The Ohio Jaztet for an evening of virtuosic and soulful jazz.

High School Jazz Band Day                                      April 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Ohio State Jazz Studies welcomes high school jazz bands from Ohio and beyond. Bands present short performances for comments and receive an individualized private mini-clinic. The Ohio Jaztet will conclude the day with a short performance.
