New Planetarium Director Announced

Wayne M. SchlingmanWayne M. Schlingman joined the astronomy department in July as director of Ohio State’s planetarium. Schlingman received his PhD at the University of Arizona where he worked at the Center for Astronomy Education researching the teaching and learning of general education and introductory astronomy. He will be working with faculty and students across many departments to fully utilize the technology available in the new full-dome theater.

Psychology Professor Wins $1.6 Million NIH Grant

Vladimir SloutskyVladimir Sloutsky, professor, psychology, and director of the Cognitive Development Lab, received a five-year, $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the development of categorization and category learning in infants and young children. Category learning and categorization are critical components of human intelligence; this research will provide a window into how these important processes emerge and change in the course of development.


Lantern Garners Multiple Awards

The Lantern garnered the highest number of awards in the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists Competition. The Lantern and its staff won seven awards; no other school won more than two. Staff members won first-place awards and $500 scholarships for features, news, opinion and sports. The Lantern placed second among college daily newspapers, as well as in the sports and news categories.

Ohio State's Staff Appreciation Week, July 28 - August 1, includes activities to recognize Ohio State staff members for their valuable contributions to the university.

Assistant Dean to Give Presentation at NCURA Meeting

Andrea Ward RossAndrea R. Ward Ross, assistant dean, College of Arts and Sciences, will present, “Moving in the right direction: Formal and informal methods of evaluation for staff training programs,” at the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) annual meeting in Washington, D.C., August 12. Ohio State co-presenters are Karla M. Gengler-Nowak, director, Research Analytics and Reporting in Medicine Administration, College of Medicine; and Aimee Nielsen-Link, director, Ohio State Health Sciences Office, Office of Sponsored Programs.

Development as FreedomCultural Resilience Reading Group Meeting

The Mershon Research Network in Cultural Resilience’s reading group will discuss Amartya Sen's book, Development as Freedom, and its implications for small-scale cultural and linguistic practices, Tuesday, August 19, 2-4 p.m., 120 Mershon Center. Biometric Screening/PHA Deadline:
September 30

All faculty and staff must have a Biometric Screening and complete their Personal Health and Well-Being Assessment (PHA) by September 30, to earn medical plan premium credit and have medical plan choice for 2015. Those who opt not to complete the PHA will be limited to the one medical plan (Basic PPO), which has higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
