Earth Scientist Co-Edits New Edition of Book Important for Others in Field
David Cole, professor, Earth sciences, is co-editor of a new edition of Geochemistry of Geologic CO2 Sequestration, which takes stock of current understanding of carbon sequestration. Cole describes the volume, published in late 2013, as “the first comprehensive review to cover in detail the fundamental geochemical processes associated with storage of CO2 in subsurface formations.” He views the volume as “a wonderful research and teaching tool that other researchers can build upon.”

Mathematics Professor Emerita Receives Profession’s Top Distinguished Service Award
Joan Leitzel, professor emerita, mathematics, received the 2014 Dr. Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics at the annual joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 16. Leitzel was recognized for “her far-sighted work of creating programs to decrease the need for remediation in colleges and for her leadership on the national level.” The Gung and Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics is the top award for service given by the MAA.

COMPAS Photo Contest
 The COMPAS (Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society) program in the OSU Center for Ethics and Human Values is sponsoring a photography contest to explore the interaction between public and private. The contest is open to all university faculty, students, staff, and alumni as well as the Columbus community. Professional photographers will judge submissions and cash prizes will be awarded. Deadline: February 6.

 Harvard University Professor L. Mahadevan presents, Sickle Cell Anemia: Physics and Physiology of a Molecular Disease. Mahadevan describes how in-vitro experiments and theoretical models lead to predictive quantitative diagnostics and sets the disease in the broader context of evolutionary dynamics. Mahadevan is the de Valpine Professor of Applied Mathematics; professor, organismic and evolutionary biology; and professor, physics, at Harvard University. He uses mathematics to understand the physical and biological organization of matter in space and time. Lecture: 3-4 p.m., Ohio Union’s U.S. Bank Conference Theater. Reception: 4-5 p.m., Ohio Staters Traditions Room. Both: free/open to the public.

The Museum of Biological Diversity (MBD) 10th Annual Open House, February 8, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
 The MBD, 1315 Kinnear Rd., is strictly a research-teaching museum, but its denizens know how to throw a party. One day a year, the public is invited to celebrate biological diversity with an extravaganza of special displays, live animals, tours and demos, fantastical decorations, and multiple hands-on activities. Event is free; parking free at 1315 Kinnear Rd. and adjacent lots.
