Box-Steffensmeier Joins BOT Academic
Affairs Committee
Janet Box-Steffensmeier, the Vernal Riffe Professor of Political Science, has been appointed faculty representative to the Academic Affairs and Student Life Committee of the Ohio State University Board of Trustees. “I care deeply about Ohio State and consider it a privilege to be able to give back,” said Box-Steffensmeier.
Molecular Geneticists Show How Popular Diet Fights Cancer
Andrea Doseff, associate professor, internal medicine and molecular genetics; and Erich Grotewold, professor, molecular genetics and horticulture and plant science, and director of Ohio State’s Center for Applied Plant Sciences (CAPS) have published new research suggesting that a compound abundant in the Mediterranean diet deflects cancer cells’ ability to escape death, by altering a very specific step in gene regulation.
Department of Linguistics Takes Top Honors
The Department of Linguistics ranks 7th in the U.S. and 17th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. The department was ranked for excellence in the following areas: research, teaching, internationalization, engagement, innovation, facilities, employability, and specialist criteria.

Mathematician Receives Simons Fellowship
 Professor Yuval Flicker, mathematics, received the Simons Fellowship for his project, Studies in Automorphic Forms. The Fellowship allows Flicker to spend a sabbatical year on this research.

Memorial Service for William Edward Nelson, Jr.
Professor Emeritus William Edward Nelson, Jr., died on May 16, 2013. He was professor in both the Department of African American and African Studies and the Department of Political Science. Nelson was chair of African American and African Studies. He retired from Ohio State in 2009 after 40 years of distinguished service. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, May 25, 1-2:30 pm, Archie M. Griffin Ballroom, Ohio Union.
2013 Campus Campaign Update
 The 2013 Campus Campaign wrap-up celebration, May 15, saw the College of Arts and Sciences ranked #1 in participation by units of 1,500+ employees, finishing at 47% participation, an increase over 2012 participation. ASC staff members recognized for outstanding volunteer service: Lauren Bennett, Foreign Language Center, Volunteer Award; and Eric Drake, statistics, Kelli Fickle, English, and Brittany Poast, chemistry and biochemistry received Volunteer Leadership Awards.
Boots on the Ground in Europe: Normandy

Students in the history department’s WWII Study-Tour Program hit the beaches in Normandy. Next stop: Paris. Follow them following their dreams: along the way, they are posting updates about their adventures to the ASC Tumblr site.
