Alison Philpotts
A Calgary-based landscape painter, Alison Philpotts is best known for her rolling prairie and mountain scenes depicting southern Alberta. Philpotts’ paintings have shown at the Calgary Stampede’s Western Showcase and at the Banff Centre. She is currently represented by Evanescence Gallery and Art Studio in High River. Philpotts will be in attendance for “first Friday” artist's reception, 7 – 9 PM on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Evanescence Gallery. The public is welcome to view the show from March 2 until March 28. Jaime Angelopoulos
Opening at the Stride Gallery in Calgary on Friday, February 24, artist Jaime Angelopoulos shows sculptural and drawing work. She says: "With my sculpture practice I explore bodily experience, including sensation, physicality, and, more recently, the emotional/spiritual self. Innate characteristics and functions of the body are considered in contrast to shapeable aspects of human behavior." Visit the gallery website for more information.

  • April 21: Another great offering from Visual Arts Alberta! Professional artist Lyndal Osborne will share her vast knowledge and impart tips on the creative process in production of new work, artist statements, gallery proposals, residencies and grants. This workshop is crucial  for emerging artists and a helpful refresher for mid-career artists. The workshop is free to members of Visual Arts Alberta, Harcourt House, CARFAC and $10 for non-members.   • June 9 & 10: Save these dates for the CARFAC National Conference for the Visual Arts in Ottawa. This year’s conference will include discussions about copyright, the relationships between artists and galleries, the campaign for the Artist’s Resale Right, and the presentation of the Visual Arts Advocacy Award. Participants will also get a chance to rub shoulders with art lawyers who will be in town for their own conference – the first of its kind in Canada.   • October 18: All Visual Arts Alberta members are invited to participate in the Members Miniatures FUNdraiser! Eligible artists can submit up to three miniatures from which at least one work will be selected for this exhibition and FUNdraiser featured from October 18th to November 24th, 2012 in the Visual Arts Alberta gallery. Member artists must submit at least one framed artwork that is ready to hang or display and that is 12 x 12 x 12" or smaller. Artists set the retail price and if the artwork sells, the proceeds will be equally divided between the artist and Visual Arts Alberta.  Full details will be available soon.

The Eldon and Anne Foote Edmonton Visual Arts Prize
In partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council, we are elated to be unveiling a new visual arts prize for Edmonton and surrounding area artists. Established with the Eldon and Anne Foote Fund at Edmonton Community Foundation, this $10,000 prize will be awarded to an individual or group of artists who reside in Edmonton or one of it's four surrounding counties. Artists are nominated by an art gallery, arts group or organization. View the application here and contact us for more information. The application deadline is Friday, March 30, 2012.

Open Photo/Open Digital 2012
Ink has been put to paper and the dates have been confirmed. Best of all, for all those in southern Alberta, we’ve switched up the Opening locations and will begin in Calgary this year! Our plan is to open the exhibition at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary sometime in early to mid-September (date TBA) with the show running September 17 until October 15, 2012. The work will then move on up to Edmonton, to be showcased at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium from October 22 until November 19, 2012. With over $1,100 in prizes to be awarded, get your submission together soon! Deadline is April 27, 2012. View the submission form here.
