The Hottest Artists in Edmonton get shortlisted for the Eldon and Anne Foote Edmonton Visual Arts Prize!

From fifteen entries the following five were chosen for the shorlist: Paul Freeman (nominated by Harcourt House Arts Centre), Alan Henderson (nominated by Douglas Udell Gallery), David Janzen (nominated by Peter Robertson Gallery), Amy Loewan (nominated by Strathcona County Art Gallery @ 501), and Arlene Wasylynchuk (nominated by the Art Gallery of Alberta). The winner of this $10,000 prize will be announced during a short ceremony on the summer solstice, June 21 at 7:30 pm at the Visual Arts Alberta Gallery in Edmonton. In Calgary: Follow the Winter
Wil Murray
Skew Gallery in Calgary is pleased to present its second solo exhibition by Wil Murray. Feeling the historical weight of Berlin, and its deep sense of loss, his work in "Follow the Winter" has taken a heavier turn. Murray continues his exploration of collage construction and the reactionary relationships that supervene the acts of painting and their documentation.In this new body of work. In Edmonton: Curiousities: a fast & dirty project
5 Curators, 5 Dressers, 20 Artists, 1 Moving Van
Curiosities: a fast & dirty project is an exhibition about the politics of furniture. The project will be exhibited in a moving van in three different locations in Edmonton.

Hours and Locations:
Friday June 1: 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm: West side of 124th Street between 105 and 106 Avenue
Saturday June 2: 9:00 am-3:00 pm: West side of 104 Street between Jasper and 100 Avenue
Sunday June 3: 12:00-5:00 pm: North side of Whyte Avenue between 105 and 104 Street

The project is a collaboration between five Edmonton curators: Jennifer Rae Forsyth, Robert Harpin, Kristen Hutchinson, Carolyn Jervis, and Kyla Tichkowsky and twenty artists. Each curator has chosen a chest of drawers to accommodate artworks based on five themes: intimacy, line, collections, landscape, and family. Each artist was given a single drawer from one of these dressers to create a site-specific artwork.

Judy Hamilton and Friends
Fred Katz Photography (10104-80 Ave.) hosts paintings by Judy Hamilton, jewelry by the Bead Tree, hand-painted furniture by Marilynn Carley, and sculptures and paintings by Meredith Conlin on June 2 from 10:30am -4 pm. Drop by for some refreshments, both culinary and visual!

Come and hear Stephen Williams, the Edmonton Arts Council’s Director of Grants, Awards and Support Programs, discuss the program on June 6th from 2-4 pm at Harcourt House Artist-Run Centre (10211-112 St.) and again from 7-9 pm at the Prince of Wales Armoury (10440 – 108 Ave). He will cover the program guidelines, the assessment process and offer some tips and ideas for best presentation. This is a free event, but space is limited so registrations are requested. Take a working holiday and enjoy acquiring the skills to physically "play" with clay and create 5-8 figurative clay works, including standing reliefs. Throughout the week experience drawing for sculpture, individual guidance plus instruction on form and expression, sculptural dynamics, surface handling and closure of your pieces. In Edmonton: Do you like to make things out of stuff you can find around your house? If so, sign up for the first Art of Reuse Contest! Prizes awarded for originality, design, and use of materials. In Calgary: Calgary area artists are invited to submit work for inclusion in Resolution Art Gallery’s Summer Group Show to be held from July 3 – August 12th. For full submission guidelines please visit their site for more details.
