David Downes Exhibition

We always knew that Stoke Newington was home to a host of very talented and passionate people. Now local artist David Downes is hosting an exhibition on Church Street and 10% of net sales will be donated to Stokey Local! You can help make this a success, by visiting the exhibition, and by telling your friends to do the same. David has a deep love for Stoke Newington, and this shines through in his work, so bring your cheque book with you as you are going to want to take a piece of his work home with you.
The exhibition runs from the 5 February to 5 March at 59 Stoke Newington Church Street, next door to Michael Naik.

You can also visit David's website here and there is a short promotional video here. If you can help display a poster advertising this event, please let us know.

Help always needed

We always need more volunteers to undertake the leg-work for what we hope will be some fun, community fundraising events. Whatever skills you can offer are helpful - from carousing people and organizing meetings to putting leaflets through letterboxes - if you would like to know more or get involved, email info@stokeylocal.org.

Background

If you've been forwarded this email or haven't been following the campaign recently you might like to find out more about our campaign to resist a mixed development comprising a large supermarket and 53 luxury flats, hard by Abney Park Cemetery. The development, by dint of its scale and position, will damage the local ecology, seclusion, heritage and trade. It offers only 9 "affordable" flats and a supermarket to add to 45 that are already within 1.8 miles of the site.

We're taking our battle to the Court of Appeal and you can read more about our fight on our website. We expect news on the next stage in the legal process in the next few weeks. In the meantime we continue fundraising to support the legal costs.

Big thanks to our suppliers and performers for their bountiful free produce and entertainment. Chef Philip Dundas and Mary Doherty are cooking up food donated by Growing Communities and Farm Direct, whilst Redemption are giving us some free beers. Pete Brown will be reprising his Music and Beer Matching event and R4 legend, Colin Sell will be playing the piano. Vicar of St Paul's Niall Weir will be singing as well as lending us his church hall and kitchen.

Despite Court Orders limiting our "adverse" costs, we currently face a legal bill of around £25,000 for legal actions to date. Our team of barristers continue to work at no cost to us, but we do have to pay our solicitors (at a vastly reduced rate) along with court fees and printing, etc. We'll need a further £9,000-£14,000 (depending on Protective Costs Orders) to take our case to the Court of Appeal.

We've raised an incredible £30,00 to date so need another £9,000 to cover our costs if we lose in the Court of Appeal.

If you have donated recently, we are not asking you to dig deeper, rather, we would encourage you to circulate this newsletter to friends and encourage them to make a donation.

If possible, please pay by transfer direct in to our bank account and then email us to let us know when you have made a donation.
