Crocuses at Christ's!

Floral Display in Third Court, March 2012

A Word From the Master

"Welcome to the latest Christ's College e-newsletter. After a wintry start spring has arrived at Christ's, with the appearance of crocuses in the College courts. In this edition we offer advance notice of some forthcoming events, including a joint lunch for alumni from Christ’s and Wadham College Oxford and the reunion garden party and buffet lunch for those who matriculated from 1980 to 1984. We also share some College news, including the background on the newly erected College sculpture ‘Darwin’ by Phillip King. If you have any queries about the e-newsletter or suggestions for its content please contact our Publications Officer Tamsin Astbury at  publications@christs.cam.ac.uk".

Look What's Evolving

The new sculpture Darwin by Phillip King (m. 1954), Honorary Fellow,  was erected in front of the Yusuf Hamied Centre at the end of 2011. The shapes represent different elements of Darwin's life and work:

The oval is the concept of evolution
The triangle the young Darwin
The open square the world at large
These forms find a balance between openness and enclosure

The sculpture was commissioned by the Yusuf and Farida Hamied Foundation. Both Dr Yusuf Hamied and Phillip King matriculated at Christ’s College in 1954.
Congratulations also to Phillip King who will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the University in June.

New Incentive for Charitable Bequests

Among the many generous gifts Christ's has received throughout its history, legacies have been particularly important. Friends and well-wishers, Fellows and Members have remembered the College in their will, enabling Christ's to develop and flourish as a leading centre of excellence. All legacies, large or small, can make a real difference. Christ's College is a registered charity (Registered Charity No.1137540) so a legacy to the College may reduce the inheritance tax payable on your estate. The Government is introducing a new incentive for charitable bequests by providing a reduction in the rate of IHT from 40% to 36% where 10% or more of the deceased person’s net estate (after deducting IHT exemptions, reliefs and the nil-rate band) is left to charity. This will come into effect for deaths on or after 6 April 2012.

When you make or update your will, please consider including a legacy to Christ's College. Alternatively, you can make a gift by adding a codicil to your existing will. By doing so, you can help to ensure that Christ's maintains its tradition of excellence for generations to come. More information is available on the website: www.christs.cam.ac.uk/

Telephone Campaign

The annual Telephone Campaign will take place between 17 March and 1 April. 16 students have been recruited and they are looking forward to speaking with alumni and sharing stories of Christ’s and subsequent careers. If you receive a call, we do hope you will enjoy talking to them. We are aiming to raise funds for student support this year so please do make a gift if you can.

Christ’s comes to New Zealand!

Professor Frank Kelly will be travelling to New Zealand in early April, and is hosting a drinks reception at the beautiful Old Government Building in Auckland.
The reception will begin at 7pm, and is taking place in the Vice Chancellors room. This is an excellent opportunity for alumni living in/visiting New Zealand to meet with other alumni nearby and to catch up with all the latest news from College. If you would like to attend, please contact alumni@christs.cam.ac.uk

From cricket stadiums and shopping malls to rural schools and shanty towns, the book blends the best of reportage and travel writing to get under the skin of this nation in transition. What emerges is a captivating portrait of a country at a crossroads. ‘(Faber and Faber)
