A place to interrogate the norms, gain insights, and get inspired

Confession time. A couple of weeks ago, I got on a plane to Mexico City without a return ticket. The most asked question I've received is Why?!

I have wanted to live in Mexico City since I first stepped foot here in 2015. Since then, I left DC for Belgium (not Mexico), returned to my home state of Colorado (also not Mexico), quit the job that took me to all of those places (ready to go to Mexico), and then we were all grounded by the pandemic. The last year and a half has been tough all-around but it also made it even more clear that I needed out.

I could sit here and list all the reasons of why I needed a break from the US or why Mexico City has my heart, but they're irrelevant. The fact of the matter is I was unhappy where I was and a magical moment wasn't going to change that. It was my responsibility to move towards the life I envision for myself. A life that brings me joy.

That is what I want for each and every one of us. I implore you to evaluate what is and isn't working for you in your life and take the steps necessary to make your desires a reality. Advocate for yourself. We may not get everything we want, but miserable is not a way to live. Because "if we're not talking about quality of life, then what are we even talking about?”

Or as my friend Laura once said, “You know Ivana likes you if she's with you because she's never anywhere she doesn't want to be.”

This week I want to shout out Dr. Kiona, better known on the internet as How Not to Travel Like a Basic Bitch, and Rita McNiff of Like A Cuban. I met them both on one of their educational trips to Cuba and was fortunate enough to join their pilot trip to El Salvador last week. They are a perfect pair who do wonderful work highlighting people and places whose stories we don't often get to hear. All the while providing inspiring experiences only made possible through the relationships they've built with the communities on the ground.

Ways to Support this Project:

  1. Share this newsletter with someone you love. Or even someone you just kinda-sorta like. I'm not picky.

  2. Keep me fueled with tea. Venmo works too.
