Yspaniola frequently recruits volunteers, providing them with the opportunity to experience life in the Batey and have a meaningful experience here in the Dominican Republic. This summer, we welcomed Caroline Alba and Emery Turner. During their week-long stay, Caroline and Emery gained valuable work experience, while simultaneously participating in life in the Batey with a host family.
Caroline and Emery performed various tasks including a short excel project, working on our newsletter, conducting mock interviews to help our university scholars polish their interview skills, and also helping with their resumes. Outside of the office, they had the chance to partake in intercultural exchange with their homestay families in the heart of the community. Caroline was happy that this allowed her to immerse herself in the Batey and practice her Spanish speaking and listening skills. Caroline and Emery also went on some local excursions with Yspaniola in order to experience different parts of this beautiful country.
Emery was a returning volunteer, having completed an internship with Yspaniola last summer. She decided to come back again to volunteer, this time with her friend Caroline. During her internship, Emery had taught community english classes and led sports and other activities in our 2021 Summer Camp, and completed office work.
“It’s a great experience to develop as a professional as well as to get to know the Dominican Republic. So it’s a great opportunity to come here and work as an intern or a fellow depending on how long you want to be here”. - Emery Turner
“I can’t wait to come back and help with the summer camp.” - Caroline Alba
Emery and Caroline, we can't wait to welcome you back next time!
