How are you kicking off your summer?

In Batey Libertad, we just wrapped up our fun-packed summer camp, officially concluding our academic year!

Reflecting back on a year of learning through COVID-19

"2020 was a year of radical change, we had to adapt and face it in the best possible way. At the end of the day, I think that we did."
- Daniel, Scholar & Intern at Yspaniola
Like the rest of the world, COVID-19 impacted Yspaniola significantly. When we realized the severity of the virus, we immediately stopped all operations. However, we knew this was not a long-term solution.

Our teachers expressed determination to restart classes in September, concerned that not doing so could greatly affect our students' academic development. In fact, from the beginning of the pandemic, organizations like UNICEF expressed deep concern about a devastating increase in the global learning gap if schools in rural, marginalized communities. like Batey Libertad, closed their doors.

As a team, we worked extremely hard to create COVID-safe teaching environments in order to resume classes. Overall, it was a challenging year logistically, but we gave our best every day and we made it so our students would not miss a whole academic year!

Summer Camp
Yspaniola 2021 Summer Camp Team
With Daniel and Johnny, two rising community leaders, as Camp Directors, Yspaniola was able to host its annual Summer Camp! Even though the camp looked different from previous years, we were able to implement COVID-19 precautions while working with as many students as possible.

For two weeks, students shouted their team names, picked by Yspaniola followers, with pride as they participated in activities including art, dance, music, sports, health, literacy workshops, as well as an English intensive for our older students!

We couldn't have done it without your generous support. From the whole team of teachers, assistants, and campers, we wish to thank you personally for believing in our work and making this possible.
Last Virtual Learning Trip
Service Learning Trips have always been a part of the Yspaniola model. That's why as the world moved to a virtual setting during the pandemic, we have adapted to create Virtual Learning Trip opportunities!

This month we had our final video call with students from Clackamas High School in the United States. After a Speaker Series teaching the students about Dominican and Haitian culture, the call was set up as a cultural exchange with members of our staff, scholars, community members, and the students at Clackamas. The students were able to ask questions and practice their Spanish all the way across the Atlantic!

Hopefully, we will be able to continue our in-person Service Learning Trips in the near future, but if the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that we can continue to share our mission and culture with anyone from around the world!

Looking Ahead!
Even if our classes ended, we have more projects coming in July, to keep #elevatingeducation for our bright learners in Batey Libertad! Among other things, Emery, our Summer Intern, will be hosting English workshops for a group of secondary school students, and leading Spanish literacy-focused Reading Hours with a local assistant for our younger learners!
