We are one step closer to building our new learning center!

Thanks to your incredible support during our Holiday Match Campaign, we surpassed our largest fundraising goal ever, raising a total of $102,384! This means that our programs are fully-funded through the end of the school year, and, excitingly, we will be able to begin phase one of the new Learning Center!

Our brand new, purpose-built and fully equipped two-story center at the heart of the community will allow us to reach over 160 students. In our new Learning Center, we hope to provide many more life-enhancing opportunities for Batey Libertad students through access to high-quality education.

This year, our new goal is to raise a futher $48,000 to fully cover phase two of the construction project where we will build the second floor, furnish the center, and fund its operations for the first months.

With your help, we raised the funds to start the construction and we know that with this incredible family of supporters we will be able to accomplish this ambitious target. Let’s keep on Building Brighter Futures!

The whole Yspaniola team is incredibly grateful for your commitment to inclusive education in Batey Libertad!

New community project: ''Tiempo para mi hijo"

We are proud to announce that this January, Yspaniola's talented scholar Sofía Jean will be spearheading the launch of a new community project called “Tiempo para mi hijo” (Time for my child). Sofía will be coordinating the project as part of her internship with Yspaniola, which will enable her to put her academic knowledge to practical use in a community setting.

Sofía is teaming up with  our community engagement fellow, Pilar Perez, a social worker with extensive experience in academic and community settings in the UK and Spain, as they design and implement educational activities with our kindergarten students and their families.

The project, which will run from January until June 2022, will benefit 17 families that will work face-to-face with Sofia on curated literacy activities. Sofia will conduct fortnightly home visits in which she will advise the parents on how to best support their children in order to complete the activities, and assess their progress over the course of the project.

Tiempo para mi hijo aims to provide the parents with tools and resources that can be used in the future, as well as to foster positive parent-child interactions. In addition to this, a psychometric test will be administered at the beginning and end of the program in order to generate valuable data that can be used by Yspaniola and the community in the future.

The first sessions of “Tiempo para mi hijo” had a positive reception by all the families and we wish Sofia, Pilar, and the parents an enjoyable learning process!
