A Letter from Mayra, Lead Teacher & Yspaniola Scholar Alumna
Dear Friend,

I am delighted to be writing to you to kick off Yspaniola's 2020 Holiday Match Campaign! Donations given today through January 2nd will be matched up to our goal of $50,000. Please click here to watch my video and hear directly from me!

As many of you will know, in 2011, I was lucky enough to earn a place in Yspaniola's University Scholarship Program. I graduated from a degree in education, and today I lead Yspaniola's Learning Center. It makes me very happy to teach the students here.

I love working with my community, using my professional skills every day, and showing students that, with a good education, they can have bright and successful futures, where they can create a different world, with more equality and possibilities for those who come from low-income families.

I want all students to be able to learn at our center, so that they can become fully literate and access opportunities such as the scholarship that I was able to gain with Yspaniola, thanks to the donations that people made while I was studying at university.

We had to stop our classes in March at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the days passed and everything became more difficult, I felt very sad and worried, because I knew that the children needed a lot of help in their learning, and our future teaching the classes looked uncertain. Then, as a team, we had conversations about finding tools to support students.

To continue teaching we had to readjust our programs to enable us to take all necessary precautions, and most painful of all, reduce the number of students we could teach.

It is very sad that only some of the students we had before can receive classes and others cannot, due to the pandemic. Many children ask me when they will have classes again and I do not have a concrete answer, but I encourage them to continue developing their knowledge at home with activities that we used to do in the learning center.

In recent years, at Yspaniola, we have faced many challenges. We have faced them positively as a team, because our priority is the well-being and education of our students. It is because of them that I work with great enthusiasm every day, to provide them with a quality education so they can have a future with more possibilities and many successes in whatever they decide to do.

We are so grateful for your support each year, and this year more than ever! I hope that we can count on your support this festive season, to hit our $50,000 goal. Click here to donate today.

With deepest gratitude,

Lead Teacher, Yspaniola Learning Center
