Movie Premieres Spur Community Conversations about Mercury
In September, the Dartmouth Toxic Metals Superfund Research Program (SRP) hosted community members at movie premieres in Boston and two New Hampshire locations. After initial remarks by lead scientist Celia Chen, Ph.D. and other experts, Dartmouth’s Research Translation Core presented the new 10-minute film Mercury: From Source to Seafood, which describes how mercury enters the food chain and then clarifies misconceptions about the benefits and risks of eating seafood. Community members and stakeholders subsequently engaged in a discussion about the movie during both a question and answer period and a reception. The conversations continued on-air as NHPR’s Brady Carlson and WNHN’s Arnie Arnesen interviewed Professor Chen.

On September 10, SRP Director Bruce Stanton, Ph.D. spoke to patrons at a café in Maine about exposure to arsenic via food and water.

Grassroots Well Testing Initiative in NH Town  Reveals High Levels of Arsenic and Radon in Wells
Following a presentation by the Dartmouth SRP Community Engagement Core to the Tuftonboro Town Selectboard about the importance of regular well testing, the town’s Conservation Commission led an effort to increase well testing rates in the region. In partnership with the Dartmouth CEC and NH DES, the Commission made it easier for residents to test their water by providing a drop-off location and then driving samples to the state lab. In October, the  Dartmouth CEC presented the collective results to the town; thirty-four percent of samples exceeded the EPA’s maximum contaminant level for arsenic and twenty-five percent of the samples were above the advisory level for radon. The NH Department of Environmental Services plans to host a forum on November 13 to allow residents to ask questions about their test results and remediation options.

Bioinformatics Course a Big Success
Dartmouth investigators teamed up with the Mt. Desert Island Biological Lab to offer a six-day course that provided hands-on training on bioinformatics. Twenty-five participants gave the class high marks, including Dartmouth SRP trainees who will use the new knowledge to examine the effects of arsenic on gene expression in rice and human lung epithelial cells.The course was co-sponsored by the Dartmouth Superfund Research Program, the Dartmouth Lung Biology COBRE, and iQBS at Dartmouth.
