September's news from Loughborough Junction Action Group

Angela Akinyemi

Angela was a much-valued member of the LJAG team. She worked tirelessly for us leading our events team and many of you will know her for her brilliant organisation of the Big Lunch in 2012 and 2013 outside the Hero of Switzerland pub on Loughborough Road.  She was also working on a number of projects with local young people and had just started with Lois Acton a very successful and innovative youth mentoring project with young people from the Loughborough Estate.

Most of you will now know that tragically Angela died in childbirth two weeks ago. Her newborn daughter, Nevaeh Eden, and her first born, Daniel, survive her. LJAG has opened a fund to help support her family at this very difficult time. If you would like to contribute you can send a donation to our treasurer at 23b Flaxman Road, London SE5 9DL. Cheques should be made payable to "Loughborough Junction Action Group". Please write clearly on the envelope "Angela Akinyemi Fund".

The funeral will take place on Thursday 3 October at 1130am, St Andrew's Church Landor Road SW9 9HE then at 2.30pm Streatham Crematorium, Rowan Road, Streatham Vale SW16 5JU. Please wear a touch of orange. There will also be an event after the funeral - details will be confirmed later this week so please check our website for more information.

Welcome to your September newsletter from LJAG
As ever there is plenty going on in Loughborough Junction this month. Loughborough Farm is starting to take root in the community and volunteers have recently tasted the first results of their hard work and new artworks are going up under Cambria Bridge. And some of you might have seen the filming taking place on Padfield Road last week - word on the street is that it was Guy Ritchie's new adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

We can't sign off without mentioning Angela Akinyemi, our wonderful volunteer, who tragically died in childbirth earlier this month. Angela will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Read more about Angela in the column to the left.

Best wishes

The LJAG Team

New artworks for Cambria Bridge

Over 20 new works of art will be added to the walls underneath the railway bridge on Cambria Road over the next few weeks. The artworks have all been created by different artists interpreting the term “fossils”. And if the rain stops for long enough then the concrete slabs that run across the bridge will also have a design painted to them.

Steel rails will be fixed to the walls at a later date (TBC) to tie the artworks together into a sort of modern-day “cabinet of curiosities”.

See photos of some of the artworks.

Salads and greens thriving at Loughborough Farm

The Loughborough Farm got off to a colourful start with rainbows and water provided by the local fire brigade at our launch on the 31 August. The winter salads and oriental greens we planted are growing well and volunteers were able to take a taste of the first harvest at our last farm session. Volunteers have been busy helping with watering, building compost bins and clearing the site of rubble. We'll be meeting at the Farm (on Loughborough Road, opposite Wyck Gardens) on Saturday 28 Sept, 2-4pm if you would like to join us. Plans are afoot to build a structure that will collect rainwater and provide shelter for people and finishing off making our Loughborough Farm banner. If you would like to get involved, or can help with sourcing building materials and wood chip for free, please email Emily.

Loughborough Farm needs your vote!

The Loughborough Farm needs your vote for funding to build a mobile kitchen. It will be used to cook at the farm. It will also take the tasty food we are growing out into the community and to local events and we will use it to teach young people to cook. We are through to the final three in the regional heats for the Lloyds Bank community fund. Now it is up to you. It's easy. Do it by text or do it online. All we ask is that you do it. Thanks. Vote online or to vote by text message just text the words VOTE LWRA to 61119. You will be charged at your standard message rate. Voting is open until 1 November 2013.
