People Like Us: Martha
Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’ - Luke 10:28-32
This week's scripture has always captured my attention (probably because Mary seems to get the gold star from Jesus in this one!). Anyone who has had a sibling can likely relate to the "But she's just sitting there while I do all of the work!" complaint from Martha. And any who have ever been "worried and distracted" have likely experienced some frustration that Jesus doesn't flat out name the "one thing" that is needed.
I'm sure we can all relate to situations where we, too, are distracted. What is the one thing that we should focus on when the obligations of our daily lives pull us in so many directions?
We look forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday at 8:30, 10:50 or 11:00. Our Third Graders will receive their Bibles at 8:30!
God Bless,
Rev. Mary
