A message from the Board Chairman

July, 2016
By Jeff Walla, Board Chair

July is the month our programs are in full swing and we begin to see the magic happen when young people work with our talented coaches, learning life skills they will use in everyday life in many situations they face on a daily basis.

If you are reading this newsletter and have never seen one of our programs I encourage you to find the nearest program location and pay us a visit, it gives you a very different perspective and helps one understand that what we do is way more than just teach golf.

Our annual fundraising golf tournament was held this past Monday at Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club with perfect weather and a number of our First Tee kids in the mix, playing with their parents or coaches and more importantly demonstrating in a real sense what they are learning at The First Tee of New Hampshire.  By any measure our golf tournament was a success raising over $29,000 to help support our programs.  A huge thanks to our board, staff, and Advisory Council for making the day one to remember.  A special thank you to Josh Godfroy one of our program participants who was our auctioneer for our live auction. Our gratitude to Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club for hosting our event and ordering up the great weather.

The Fabulous Find
Thank you to all of our supporters who made donations and shopped during May at the Fabulous Find in Kittery, Maine. On Saturday June 11th TFTNH was presented with a check for $6,449 which was our share of the proceeds for the month. We would like to thank The Fabulous Find for selecting us as one of the charities it supported in May and for all the work that they do to support nonprofits in the Seacoast area.

We will be using the money to support our programs throughout the summer months. Please “Pay it Forward” by continuing to support The Fabulous Find by donating items and shopping when you are in the Kittery area.

It was a busy couple of weeks

He was selected for two The First Tee National Participant Opportunities at the IJGA - International Junior Golf Academy in Bluffton, SC June 12 - 18 and the National Par 3 Championship in Richmond, VA the following week June 21 - 26. He was able to learn and train with top notch instructors in a state of the art facility, and then competed against some of the countries best TFT Participants where he finished Second place overall.

Congratulations Steven, we hope you had the time of your life!

Championship Tour : Nature Valley First Tee Open @ Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy hills Golf Course

Lauren Thibodeau, 16 of Hampstead, NH selected during Field Announcement on Golf Channel's Morning Drive.

We hope you were tuned into the Golf Channel's Morning Drive  between 7AM - 9AM on Wednesday, July 6th, where they announced The First Tee Participant's field for the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. The event takes place September 13 - 18 at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy Hills Golf Course. Lauren was 1 of 4 participants selected from the Northeast Region and 1 of 81 selected in the entire First Tee Network.

"Lauren has dreamed about this opportunity since she was 7 years old and first joined The First Tee of NH."
- David Thibodeau (Dad).

"Lauren is such a great kid, always positive, and very focused on her goals.  She exemplifies exactly what it means to be a champion on and off the course, and we are proud to have  her represent our Chapter at this incredible event."
- Chris Sargent (TFTNH Program Director)

"Lauren’s golf resume is very impressive; more so, it is her persevering and poised manner while encountering golf’s and life’s frustrating challenges that inspires us, her First Tee of NH family, the most. In fact, Lauren has a confident way of transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth. Certainly, The First Tee Nature Valley Open has chosen an immensely deserving participant in Lauren Thibodeau."
- Jim Blalock (TFTNH Coach)

"Life Skill of the Month" by Coach Jim Blalock

I have been Lauren Thibodeau’s First Tee Coach since she was 7 years old. Last week, Lauren, now 16, was chosen to play in The Nature Valley First Tee Open which will take place 9/11-9/18 at storied Pebble Beach. This is the highest goal for all First Tee Participants.

To achieve this, Lauren has consistently utilized her favorite and most guiding First Tee Life Skill: STAR (Stop, Think, Anticipate, Respond). Following are her words when speaking at the NHGA Champions Dinner.

“Tonight I would like to talk about how in recent months I have noticed that the lessons I learned in the First Tee have indeed helped me deal with life situations; how these lessons have become part of how I deal with events in life off the golf course. They have become habit and a part of my character. Coach Jim taught me the STAR acronym which stands for Stop, Think, Anticipate, and Respond. It is taught to help you when you come across a tough shot or a tough circumstance on the golf course. Your ball ends up in a bad spot. Instead of panicking and thinking you will certainly have a bad score on this hole,.. instead,… you STOP, which gives your mind a minute to react and relax. Then THINK, so you can calmly think of all your options, ANTICIPATE the outcome of the various options, then RESPOND and take what you feel is the best shot to get out of the situation. It really helps to get you out of a negative spiral or from feeling bad about your situation that you cannot change and allowing it to influence your next shot and continuing the spiral! I have worked on this skill for many years now and recently I found that I used it off the golf course without even realizing it.”

We Met the Challenge!
In January the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, based in the Upper Valley (Lebanon, Hanover, Claremont and New London), challenged us to raise $25,000 from others in the Upper Valley.  If we met this challenge the Foundation put forth that $25,000 would be met with a Challenge Grant from the Foundation.  With the help of many individuals and business based in the Upper Valley we met this challenge at the end of June.   We have many to thank for helping us meet this challenge and they include the following:
  • Golf & Ski Warehouse
  • Crown-Point Cabinetry
  • Brian Stowell
  • Larry Draper
  • Bruce Waters
  • Worth Parker
  • Couch Family Foundation
  • Geokon
  • Gary Daniels Consulting, LLC
  • Hanover Country Club
  • Lake Sunapee Country Club
  • Bruce King
  • Jeremy Walla
  • Jeff & Missy Walla
The Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation has been steadfast supporters of our unique youth development programming for the past three years and we are grateful for their support and generosity.
