We Can’t Change the Past, But Lawyer+Mom+Owner Summit Can Change the Future.

Throughout my legal career, I’ve been fortunate to have a handful of mentors along the way. Sadly, not a single one was a woman.

My sole female law professor at Cornell Law School, who taught two of my classes refused to call on me even when I was the only student raising my hand. She hosted open lunches, and when I was the only student to show up, she cancelled the lunch.

At my first job at FERC, my female boss berated me for speaking up at meetings and responding to questions about my files that she wasn’t able to answer. When I used my FERC boss as a reference for a client several years later, the client revealed that my boss had given me an awful resume - though the client hired me anyway because I’d helped her out a few times while I was at FERC.

When I started my law firm as a still-green energy attorney in 1993, plenty of men who owned small energy shops took the time to meet with me and give me advice.  But there were no female mentors to be had because back then, I couldn’t find a single woman lawyer who headed her own shop.

Lack of female mentorship hasn’t hurt me.  I built a successful career in spite of it.  Still, it would have been nice to have had women mentors and role models in my corner to expand my horizons and show me what was possible
Thirty-two years into my career, it’s too late to go back and change the past. But I can change the future and so can you.  Join us for the Parenting, Practice and Profit in the Pandemic. on September 30-October 1, 2020. You’ll hear from two dozen different women at the top of their game who will speak on topics like legal issues related to pandemic practice, balancing homeschooling and personal health challenges while running a law firm and transitioning to another law-related position.

With our conference networking tools, you’ll have a chance to connect with other women lawyers who can inspire you by example and who are willing to mentor you whether it’s to pay it forward or, as in my case, to make sure that the future for women lawyers is better than the past.
Just 16 more days to register for the for just $39 to attend live and/or secure a full recording of the event. The price for recordings will go up after Oct. 1 so if you want to lock in the $39 rate, sign up today!

Here’s a piece from the ABA Journal on how to increase the number of equity partners at law firms. Sadly, the author’s mentors were male only.

Not sure what you might do with the second half of your career?  The Harvard Business Journal has some ideas here - as do some of the Summit speakers on the Transitions Panel.
