Fortune 500: Patents, Licensing, and Investing

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of discussing the role that patents play for Fortune 500 companies with IP experts from Google, Phillips, GE, IBM, Nokia, and Verizon. The conversation touched on how corporations manage their IP portfolios; how they value their own and external patents; emerging IP business models; their strategies for managing their often-large portfolios of IP; and the role of standards-essential patent pools. You can watch a video of the discussion here.

Speaking of industry partners, we will be hosting an exciting panel discussion in February with three leaders from Big Biopharma - Marian Nakada (Johnson & Johnson Innovation), Shafique Virani (Roche) and Steven Weinstein (Novartis Ventures). The panelists will share their perspectives on biopharma VC investing strategies, how to pitch biopharma investors, the surge in biotech IPOs, hot research areas within biopharma, and best practices for establishing R&D partnerships between industry and academia. Register here, including how to schedule an appointment with them.

We are also very excited to welcome Javier Saade as CTV’s latest Executive in Residence! Javier, a serial entrepreneur and venture investor by background, recently left the Obama administration after serving as the Associate Administrator of the Office of Investment & Innovation, where among other things he oversaw the government’s SBIR program. You can read more about Javier and his fellow CTV XIRs here.

Finally, on January 12th I will be hosting a conversation with Steve Blank, founder of the Lean LaunchPad methodology and widely-recognized entrepreneurship guru. Steve and I will be discussing some of the lessons learned from the growth of the New York start-up ecosystem over the past decade, compared to similar booming tech hubs such as Silicon Valley, Cambridge, and others. You can register here.

Sincerely,
