CTV’s Year in Review; New Website; Tech Initiatives in NYC
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back! Reflecting upon the academic year that just finished, CTV had quite a bit of good news to report, with record numbers of inventions (392, up 32% in the past 6 years), licenses and option agreements with industry (106, up 100% in 6 years), and start-ups (18, up 80% in 6 years). With all of that activity, we certainly were happy to have the summer break, and hope that you found it as refreshing as we did. The new academic year is starting with a bang, especially for the technology development and entrepreneurship initiatives with which we have the pleasure of being associated:
- The NYC Media Lab’s Annual Summit was a huge success, with over 700 attendees, $25K technology challenge grants announced from Publicis, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, Bloomberg, Time Warner Cable, Hearst, NBCUniversal, and others, and over 50 student and faculty teams presenting demos of cutting-edge technology solutions. Columbia Professors Steve Feiner (SEAS) and Mark Hansen (Journalism) both gave great talks on the main stage, and teams from the labs of Drs. Shih-Fu Chang, Julia Hirshberg, Laura Kurgan, and others attracted a huge crowd. For more information on the summit, including a list of the open challenge projects and videos of the talks, please click here.
- PowerBridgeNY, the clean energy proof-of-concept center funded by two $5M grants from NYSERDA (one lead by Columbia, one by NYU), is launching this year’s call for proposals. Last year, 12 research teams from Columbia, NYU, Cornell, CUNY, Stony Brook, and Brookhaven were awarded funding out of 50 applications! If your lab may have a clean energy technology that could become a promising start-up, click here for more information, or RSVP to join us live for the information session at Columbia on Sept 29th.
- Now in its fourth year, the Columbia Coulter Translational Research Partnership is accepting Pre-Proposals for the 2014 application cycle. The Partnership will deploy funding and resources (marketing, regulatory, reimbursement, and legal) to help advance nascent biomedical ideas from conception to proof-of-concept. Click here for more information, or come to an upcoming information session on campus.
Finally, we just launched our newly-designed CTV website. We hope that the new site makes it even easier to browse all of the great technologies available for licensing at Columbia! Check the site often for news about upcoming events on campus and elsewhere in NYC.
Best wishes,
Orin Herskowitz
Executive Director, CTV
VP for Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer
