We all know the feeling of being left out – that sensation when you suddenly realise you’re on the outside of things. There’s a memorable scene in the film ‘Kung Fu Panda’ where the eponymous hero is desperate to get in to the temple, but finds himself stuck outside the walls. Cue a desperate attempt to get inside (with hilarious results) – I think we’ve all experienced the same kind of desperation at times.

Very often that desperation is down to a desire for connection – as social animals we generally desire above all to be connected. Some will say this is not so for them, that they are happy to remain on their own. What they tend to mean is that they need less human connection than many others, it’s very rare for anyone to want no kind of connection at all.

As much as we are aware of our own need to be connected, so we should be aware of that need in others: as much as we wish to be included, so we should include.
