Islam has this concept of Jihad – a holy struggle – which is most publicly linked to the actions of fanatics who commit acts of violence against military and civilian targets in the name of Allah. Jihad has a bad reputation.

But physical violence only belongs to one form of thinking about Jihad. There are others: the key one (in my mind at least) is the ‘internal struggle’ to be a good and devout Muslim.

We all face internal struggles. The concept of a holy war, a struggle for that which is most important, applies to each of us, regardless of belief/faith/religion or lack of it. And the thing is that this is a war which will go on throughout our whole life – although some of the struggles may become easier, others remain difficult. When we fight against our worst instincts, we struggle daily.
