This Week Let's Focus on Our Breathing...
In this time of increased pressure and stress it is important to breathe deeply several times throughout the day.
Breathing deeply (inhaling through the nose for 6 seconds, then holding it for 6 seconds, then exhaling slowly through the mouth for 6 seconds, pushing all of the stale air out ) is a great way to reduce anxiety and everyday stress.
There are more advanced breathing techniques such as breathing in through one nostril at a time and exhaling through the other, but the process described above is a good way to get started.
A yoga class can help you master breathing techniques, enhance your ability to remain still, and teach you how to relax (something we rarely learn in our usual life experiences or education).
Often we take breathing for granted, but this tends to be relatively shallow breathing and does not supply enough oxygen to the brain for it to counteract the increased stress and anxiety that we might be experiencing. Schedule some breathing time in your planner, just a gentle reminder to breath deeper throughout the day and to stop every now and then to breath deep as described above. I think you will find it very helpful.
