Yu Ming Serving More Students and Creating Opportunity

Today was Yu Ming’s first day of school with nearly 100% of our 550+ scholars logging in for live classes or participating in one-on-one Kindergarten Gentle Beginnings meetings with their teachers! In order to ensure a strong start, Yu Ming leaders, staff, and stakeholders spent the summer designing multiple scenarios for the 2020-21 school year and developing a Distance Learning hub that will serve our students and families in both our virtual and hybrid models. On June 9, we also took a major step forward in the life of our school when the Alameda County Board of Education (ACOE) approved a material revision of our charter that will allow us to enroll three additional Kindergarten classes next Fall.

This growth at Yu Ming is important because it provides additional seats for local families who have been demanding a quality dual immersion education; it increases access for underserved students to a top free, public school; and it grows the number of students who are bilingual and biliterate, and ready to be changemakers in a diverse, global world.

The only Mandarin immersion public school in Oakland, a recipient of the 2019 National Blue Ribbon, and the 2020 California Distinguished School Award, Yu Ming has consistently had waitlists in the hundreds over the years--numbers greater than our total enrollment. So we are thrilled to be able to welcome more students soon.
But what our school is most excited about is that we can now reserve not 20%, but a minimum of 30% of Kindergarten seats for socio-economically disadvantaged students--one of the only legal mechanisms currently available in California to close educational opportunity gaps. This means that, even before the general lottery opens to all California residents, low-income students are among the first students to have access to Yu Ming.
Yergalem Andetsion, a first grade parent, celebrated the ACOE decision: "Giving access to an amazing school like Yu Ming to more students is a blessing for all of us local families with young children... and for our school community! I am so proud of the work the school, and our parents, have been doing to grow its diversity, and to make sure each family and student thrives and feels like they really belong. And this is just the beginning!"

Yu Ming is already among the highest performing in the state for subgroups that are often left behind in public schools. 96% of Yu Ming's socio-economically disadvantaged students are reading at or above grade level (vs. 39% in the state); as are 81% of our exceptional learners or students with disabilities (vs. 27.5% in the state). Yu Ming is the highest performing school in Alameda County and at the very top of all California schools (0.2%).

We are proud to be a community of advocates creating more high quality school seats for California students, especially students that continue to be left behind by our public school system. Creating opportunity is the first step towards the equitable education our country needs and all students deserve.

We are deeply thankful to the Alameda Board of Education for their vote and trust, and to our many partners supporting equity and access. There is much work to be done on this path for systemic social change, but together, we continue to advance Yu Ming's mission to nurture our inclusive and diverse community of students, to become empowered, engaged, and outstanding global citizens.
