Last Monday, a proud and joyful Yu Ming community gathered with students, staff, families, and friends to celebrate our 2019 National Blue Ribbon School Award, conferred to us by the U.S. Department of Education. We also celebrated what Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff designated by mayoral proclamation, “Yu Ming Charter School Day”!
Thank you to our founders, who in opening Yu Ming just 10 years ago with the support of the Alameda County Office of Education, founded the first Mandarin Immersion charter school in California and the only public Mandarin Immersion school not bound by district residence.
Thank you to our incredible students, staff, families, board and community partners for pouring your dedication, hard work and love into creating a truly world-class school that excellently serves all students regardless of zip code, income, language background, or ability.
I think Yu Ming student body president Leo captured many of our feelings on Monday when he spoke about our global scholars and award-winning school,
"Yu Ming" translates to “Education for a bright future.” I know that this philosophy of education is founded in a belief in learning for the sake of learning itself - not for the outcome or final product. Students at Yu Ming are motivated by an innate curiosity and love of knowledge. I personally believe that the experience of learning is the highest purpose of education. … As a student of Yu Ming since all the way back in kindergarten, I know firsthand that the education our school offers is a competitive, world-class one. Receiving an award as prestigious as the Blue Ribbon simply affirms that truth for me.
Student Council member and 8th grade student Daria, described our close-knit and supportive learning community and the impact she hopes to make with her Yu Ming education,
When I began my journey at Yu Ming in kindergarten in their first year, Yu Ming welcomed me with open arms. I was surrounded by supportive teachers there to help me learn and grow, making the daunting challenge of learning a new language seem like jumping over a puddle. Yu Ming has provided me opportunities that I couldn’t have received at any other school. As the only free public Mandarin immersion school in Oakland, it has thoroughly prepared me for high school and afforded me opportunities that will stay with me for a lifetime. ...The fact that I can be so comfortable in a foreign country is so amazing to me and eventually will open so many doors for me in life ...This school makes me feel confident that after graduating and throughout my life, I will make an impact on my community and help those around me.
In coming years, Yu Ming hopes to deepen our educational impact by serving more students like Leo and Daria in Alameda County -- especially our most under-served students. Yu Ming’s authorizer, the ACOE Board of Education will be voting this December 10 on whether we will be allowed to serve more low-income families. We believe every single child should have access to a blue ribbon education. Thank you for your upcoming support on December 10 and through the years, and for helping to transform life prospects for all students.
