Yu Ming celebrates its inaugural graduating class
Congratulations, Yu Ming Class of 2019!

The 2019 class of 27 graduates has made history not just once, but twice. In 2011, these pioneering students opened the first ever Mandarin immersion charter school in the state of California. Then, on June 12, 2019, they were the first students ever to earn diplomas from Yu Ming Charter School.

Our first graduates are key to the success of our school. They were the first students to participate in each innovation as we developed an educational model anchored on balancing academic rigor with student agency and social emotional learning, fostering bilingual and empathetic global citizens, and building a community that embraces diversity. By the time they reached the eighth grade, the trailblazing class of 2019 was also first to pilot a bilingual Graduation Portfolio and Defense. Speaking eloquently in both Chinese and English to defend their portfolio of work, these graduates exemplified Yu Ming’s breakthrough model.

We are deeply proud of the Class of 2019 and cannot wait to see how they will make their mark in the world as bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural global leaders of tomorrow.

Planning begins to develop a forever home for Yu Ming

In these past few months, Yu Ming has started plans to build a  forever home for our school community. Having consistently long waitlists every year, the demand of our local community is clear. We need to build a larger, permanent facility located in the heart of Oakland in order to serve more families looking for high quality public education.

Later this year, after we have a finalized site plan, Yu Ming will launch the Building Brighter Futures capital campaign to invite supporters to invest in the development of a new facility. In addition to being able to support up to 675 students (up from our current 480), the customized facility would be designed to complement Yu Ming’s innovative education model. First gifts have already been made by the Class of 2019 as their graduating class gift. Thank you, Class of 2019 families, for being the first families to entrust your students with Yu Ming back in 2011 and now to be the first families to kickstart this important capital campaign!

We hope you all enjoy and share the video below that features members of our community speaking about what they love about Yu Ming. To learn more about the Building Brighter Futures capital campaign, including how to support this effort, please contact capitalcampaign@yumingschool.org

KaBOOM!, Blue Shield, and the Oakland community work together to build a new playground at Yu Ming

After months of planning and hundreds of volunteers coming together for a community build day, Yu Ming has a beautiful, new and improved play space for its students at our lower school campus. On July 18, 200 volunteers from Blue Shield of California, Yu Ming, and the local community transformed an old playground into a student-designed, modern play space in just one day.

Physical play for all students is important to us, and having an updated play space had been long overdue. Surface cracks and non-working structures had been roped off and deteriorating the past couple of years. Fortunately, with the timely partnership of the local Blue Shield of California and national non-profit KaBOOM!, a new play space was made possible.  Physical activity amplifies the ability to learn a new language. Consequently, having a safe, modern play space is critical for fully engaging students’ minds. Thanks to these partners and volunteers, over the lifetime of the new play space, thousands of children will have access to and be able enjoy this modern and joyful place to play.
