Customer Spotlight:

Middlebury’s Friends of Panther Hockey, the largest fan support group in NESCAC and one of the largest in Division III hockey, had its beginnings in 1999 when alumnus Kim Loewer ’76 moved to Middlebury. Upon asking Coach Beaney whom he could contact about joining the hockey booster club, he discovered that there wasn’t one. He was amazed since at that point the men’s team had just won their 5th NCAA National Championship. The coach asked Kim if he might be willing to start a group, and the rest is history.
A committee of hard-core fans was assembled, by-laws were adopted, and family dues and membership pins were planned. Early on it was determined that FOPH would support both the men’s and women’s teams and that attention would be paid to ALL Middlebury hockey players, and so it has been throughout the years.
FOPH has provided schedule cards and magnets, window decals, team programs and yearbooks, and FOPH merchandise. The organization has sponsored tournaments, banquets, and bus trips and special events like “Meet the Panthers” and “Skate with the Panthers”.
Members select the “Friends of Panther Hockey Player of the Year” of both the men’s and women’s teams. The winners are given an award and have their names engraved on a permanent trophy displayed at the FOPH table.  Thanks to the support of community members, players and their parents, the organization now in its 17th year continues to thrive.

The 2015-2016 men’s hockey program has a new look. After 28 years Coach Bill Beaney has retired and new Coach Neil Sinclair begins his first season as full time head coach of the men’s team. Co-Presidents Jim Laberge and Scott Needham and the FOPH Board of Directors are wishing the new Coach Sinclair and the long time women’s Coach Mandigo all the best for a great hockey season.

  • Rudolph first alighted on the holiday scene in 1939, when in-store Santas at Montgomery Ward stores distributed 2.4 million copies of the booklet “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” written by Robert L. • The Löschner family of Neuhausen, Germany, owns the biggest nutcracker collection: 4,334. It is said that German craftsmen made the first decorative nutcrackers around 1800 as a way of mocking authority figures, leading to the phrase “a hard nut to crack.”

According to holiday lore, a choirmaster distributed sugar sticks bent into the shape of a shepherds’ crook to quiet his young singers during Christmas services. Today more than 1.76 billion candy canes are made for the holidays, enough to stretch from Santa Claus, Indiana, to North Pole, Alaska, and back again 32 times.
