Celebrating Hawaii's Greatest King

Known as the “Napoleon of the Pacific,” Kamehameha and his descendants—the House of Kamehameha—would rule the Kingdom of Hawaii for six decades. Bestowed the title King Kamehameha the Great in honor of his conquest and unification of the Hawaiian Islands, some believe he was born in 1758, the year Halley's Comet was visible, coinciding with legend that a great king would one day unite the islands and his birth would be signaled by a comet. In December 1871, Kamehameha V paid tribute to his grandfather by proclaiming June 11, 1872 the first Kamehameha Day, a festive public holiday that would be celebrated with grand pageantry, floral parades, hula displays and competitive horse races in Kapiolani Park.
