Case Update

The personal cost of Christian freedoms

Dear friends,

Over the next few months we have a number of important cases in the court. I wanted you to be amongst the first to hear about them. We’ll update you when they come before the courts but in the meantime, you can find out about the cases and when they come before the courts, by reading the quick summaries below.

These cases involve a personal cost for those involved. It’s a spiritual battle and the courts can often be hostile towards the Christian faith, so please pray for these courageous men and women, and our legal team.
The cases also involve a financial cost. We don’t charge for the legal support that we provide. These cases wouldn't be possible without your financial support.  If you want to see a continued Christian witness in the courts and in our nation’s public life, please consider making a donation, we have no other source of income than the gifts of God’s people.

These cases aren't just about the individuals involved. They’re also about the bigger issues they represent – issues that affect all of us: freedom to share the gospel, freedom to bring up children according to the Christian faith, and the protection of vulnerable lives.

We are extremely thankful for the donations of our supporters, which makes our work possible. Any donation you make will be a great encouragement to the men and women mentioned below, and a great help in our continued work of speaking of Jesus Christ in our nation’s public life.

Yours, in thankfulness for your partnership in the gospel,
Andrea Minichiello Williams
Chief Executive, Christian Concern and Christian Legal Centre

Punished for holding out the hope of Jesus

Having experienced God’s grace herself, Victoria Wasteney knows that Jesus has the power to change lives. That's why, when a Muslim colleague came to her in distress, Victoria offered to pray for her, and later also gave her a book. For this, Victoria's employer suspended her, and an Employment Tribunal upheld the decision. We’re supporting Victoria as she appeals it.

Seeking justice for aborted baby girls

When Aisling Hubert heard that two doctors weren't prosecuted for offering to arrange abortions of baby girls, simply for being girls, she decided to do something. But after bringing a private prosecution against the doctors involved, a judge ordered Aisling to pay their legal bill, a cost of £25,000! Our team is helping Aisling in her effort to overturn the decision and bring the case to trial.

'Give me reasons to live, not to die'

Nikki Kenward was left so severely paralysed by Guillain Barre syndrome that at one point she was only able to blink. Last year, the Director of Public Prosecutions changed prosecution guidelines in cases of assisted suicide, leaving people like Nikki at greater risk. She and her husband Merv challenged the move and we are now supporting them in their Judicial Review.

The cost of publicly proclaiming the gospel

Street preacher Mike Overd says: "My motivation for preaching the gospel is my love for Jesus Christ and my deep concern for people who do not know His great love." Yet Judge Shamim Qureshi fined Mike for causing 'emotional pain' to a homosexual man who demanded to debate the issue. Mike is appealing the judgment, and we'll be with him every step of the way.

Keeping children with Christian parents

A Christian couple were heartbroken when social workers took away the two young brothers, from a very traumatic background, that they had adopted. The social workers disapproved of their Christian parenting, and a Family Court Judge refused to return the children. We're helping them in the effort to reunite their family, and helping other Christian families in similar situations.
