Update for Readers

Issue 11/2014

An update for lovers of contemporary fiction from author Dave Cornford.
Shorts or Longs?
I've been pounding away at the "shorts" recently - books for the Live-Fiction series, each with about 10,000 words. That's about an hour's read.  Number 9 ("All Bets are Off") is currently being edited, and number 10 is well underway.

One of the beta readers gave some great specific feedback, but when I asked "Did you like it?" his response was that short stories often leave him unsatisfied, unless there's a killer twist (and even then only sometimes). He thought that "All Bets Are Off" was based on a premise that could "easily" support to a novel-length work.

So, I'm currently plotting out the football themed novel - which if it comes off will basically involve adding Performance Anxiety to All Bets Are Off and tripling it.

What are your thoughts on short fiction and long fiction?  When do you enjoy one or the other? Let me know by return email.

Bundles - Great Value for Readers
Bundles and multi-author bundles are all the rage at the moment. Author-preneur Joanna Penn was part of 12 author mystery/thriller boxed set that made the NY Times Best Seller list - with great benefits to all 12 authors.  Here's her post about it.

For the reader, it's an easy (and inexpensive) way to try work from a number of authors. For authors, they get to share promotion for the book and find readers who like what they've tried and might move on to buy some of their other work.

Single author bundles are also popular.  The "Kings of Serial" Sean Platt and David Wright perfected the formula with Yesterday's Gone, which is structured like 6 episode TV series. They're currently working on Season 5.

My series Advanced Smash Repairs follows this model, (see the six episodes and the six-pack bundle here) while Guys Can Read is a collection of stories that guys might like to read: it features Home & Hardware, Spillage, Performance Anxiety, No Room in the Bin, Pick Me! Pick Me!, I Can Touch the Walls, Threadbare and Lost. It's available now as an ebook at amazon.

Coming soon as collections of Live Fiction stories will be 7 Deadlies, The Hacker Pack and The Sports Pack.
