With authoritarianism and inequality rising, the mission of legal empowerment -- equipping people to understand and exercise basic rights -- is more vital than ever.

The Legal Empowerment Leadership Course aims to cultivate a global cadre of leaders who share a common understanding of our field and are dedicated to its growth.

The course is co-sponsored by Central European University, the Bernstein Center for Human Rights at New York University Law School, the Global Legal Empowerment Network, Namati, and the Open Society Justice Initiative.

From December 4th till December 8th, respected practitioners and academics will lead course participants in an in-depth exploration of key themes, including the history of the legal empowerment movement, the intersection of legal empowerment and community organizing, and the connection between grassroots casework and systemic change.

The course emphasizes peer-to-peer learning. Every participant will have the chance to present and seek feedback on a challenge or an opportunity s/he is encountering in her or his work.

We invite applications from practitioners, policy makers, donors, and researchers. Scholarships are available to a limited number of applicants on a competitive basis.

In our first year, over 400 people from 79 countries applied -- the largest number of applicants Central European University has received for any course in its history. The course evaluations are the highest they've seen.

This course is an opportunity to reflect on what we have learned as a movement, to deepen our connections across borders, and to discern how we can rise to the unique challenges of our times.

We hope you’ll consider joining us.

In solidarity,

Vivek, Michael, Marlon, Erin, and the entire team supporting the Global Legal Empowerment Network

"The Legal Empowerment Leadership Course was an absolutely inspiring experience! The course offered great insight into common challenges in the legal empowerment field and the wisdom of some of the most experienced practitioners. The week was full of teachable moments, but it also offered the opportunity to reflect and really focus on the challenges we face in our own work."
