Hundreds Protest Plans to Close 54 Schools
Watch CAN TV's complete coverage of the Chicago Teachers Union's rally on March 27th, where teachers, students, and their supporters rallied on downtown streets in opposition to Chicago Public Schools' plan to address a $1 billion deficit by closing 54 schools.
Over 100 people were detained by police (see here) for conducting a sit-in protest in front of City Hall during the protest march.
"We are moving towards this idea of every school for his or herself," said Sarah Karp, Catalyst Chicago, assessing the closures and new policies on this week's Chicago Newsroom. Karp said that a student-based budgeting process may lead to public schools operating similar to charter schools.
"Marriage Equality Now" Rally
On the eve of the U.S. Supreme Court hearings on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, local LGBT organizations and their supporters gathered downtown in support of marriage equality.
