AAFSC and Art Connects New York
cordially invite you to the
opening reception for “The Spark”

“The Spark”, a permanent art installation and group exhibition at the AAFSC office in Downtown Brooklyn, has been generously provided by Art Connects New York and curated by Maymanah Farhat.   The exhibition presents artwork in a range of media that reiterates AAFSC’s emphasis on support systems, personal empowerment, and family – while also exploring the rich cultures of West and South Asia that are an integral part of the immigrant community that we serve in New York City.

The majority of the works in the exhibition are by immigrant women artists of Arab and South Asian backgrounds who live and work in the U.S.  Several themes overlap amongst the works, most notably investigations of migration, assimilation, and cultural understanding.   The exhibition includes painting, photography, printmaking, collage, and mixed-media installations by Jaishri Abichandani, Rheim Alkadhi, Lisette Anderson, Doris Bittar, Andrew Bovasso, Mariam Ghani, Hayat Gul, Vaidehi Kinkhabwala, Joseph Lawrence, Cari Rosmarin, and Helen Zughaib. These artists’ work has been featured in galleries, museums, and international art fairs across the globe, including the Queens Museum of Art, Documenta, and the Sharjah Biennial.
