I have been doing a lot of research about Burnout for my upcoming book (Humanizing the Remote Experience), and learning important things I had no idea about.
Burnout is not a personal failure, it's an organizational issue. It's an imbalance between the demands of work and the resources of a person. And it's not just feeling tired -- it's feeling exhausted to your bones, cynical about your workplace, and ineffective in what you do. The original burnout researchers describe it as "an erosion of the soul caused by a deterioration of one’s values, dignity, spirit and will.” (Christina Maslach)
Are you burnt out? Here is a free version of the most widely-used burnout inventory, which helps divide your symptoms into those three categories (exhaustion, cynicism, inefficacy). Everyone has a different mix, and identifying where you are hit the hardest can help you to more precisely target where you need to ask for help or make some changes.
Until my book comes out next year, here is a great one from which I have found a lot of inspiration.
