All in the Mind

All in the Mind is a partnership project between Heads Together Productions and Bradford District Care Trust. The two-year project has been awarded funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and aims to inform discussions and practice at a regional and national level.

The aims of the project
The project aims to find ways to improve communication about mental health issues; particularly at the point of crisis. How can we better structure the information given to people in distress, their families and friends? Particularly in situations when someone is experiencing serious mental health issues for the first time?

How has it worked?
Following our initial period of research and discussions with both staff and with people who had direct experience of the mental heath service in Bradford, it became clear that the key to the project was to develop ideas to help make sense right at the point of admission to an Acute Ward.

“With the wards, you get out of them what you put in. But when you first get there, how do you know what you need to put in, what’s expected of you? That’s what you could help people with.”

A team of artists from Heads Together have been working on the Psychiatric Wards at Lynfield Mount Hospital. We asked people on the Wards what was the most important piece of information someone new to the Wards should know:
  • "That people here will try and find the best way to help you"
  • "You have to take your time...it's just the first step"
  • "That people do survive"
  • "How to get out of here!"
As our understanding has grown and the trust developed within the Hospital, we have been trying out some creative ideas. We have been looking at how we can use design to improve the environment of the Wards; particularly to include in the design the kind of information and narratives that patients have been asking for.

To Maplebeck Ward...
And so it has been our opportunity to show what we can do. We've been working for the last 4 months on Maplebeck Ward, developing ideas for the central area on the Ward; a space that had potential as an informal meeting space, but had been empty and bare.

We've had a lovely time, lots of discussions, ideas and hundreds of maple leaves...and now we are just about to launch the new Hub.

...and beyond!
We are looking forward to really pushing forward with the All in the Mind work this year. We have already started working with the brand new Step Forward Centre; a new space offering skills and developing pathways for people who need extra support before they can return to the community. We are looking at communication with families; possibly more design development on other wards at Lynfield Mount; further work up at the Airedale Centre for Mental Health...

Real Partnership
And none of this would have been possible without developing an effective partnership with Bradford District Care Trust and the support of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Thank you.
