We love the sense of camaraderie and collaboration that made this month's wine possible. We recently sang the praises of Australian wine during one of our Charlou tastings, and we've been in the unofficial fan clubs of Monterra Wines and Dowie Doole for awhile now. The brains behind those wineries are just two of the collaborators that bring us this beautiful new label.
Speaking of Monterra, our "First Dibs" bottle this month comes from their estate vineyards in South Australia: the 2016 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cab from the McLaren Vale - it is rich and full bodied, exhibiting blue and black fruits and French oak tannins. It's Always Better With Friends
The stylish Colab and Bloom is a collaboration between Australian wine industry veterans Nick Whiteway, Brad Rey, Norm Doole (of Dowie Doole!), and Mike Farmilo (pictured), former winemaker at the prestigious Penfolds Grange and current winemaker at Monterra. The fruit comes from their estate vineyards in South Australia.
The grapes for this 2017 Pinot Gris come from a vineyard in the McLaren Vale, not far from the Colab and Bloom winery. The sweet and floral nose is reminiscent of melon, honey and pear, while the body balances this ripeness with a juicy burst of pink grapefruit acidity. Try pairing with fresh vegetables, sushi, Tilapia or herbed chicken.

Old World Grape, New World Digs
Australia has earned a hard-fought reputation for making Old World varietals just as well as the countries that introduced them to the world. Montepulciano is a great example: it is both a town in the Italian province of Siena, and a grape that produces round and plummy wine in central and southern Italy.
The diurnal range provided by the ocean breezes and sunny days in the McLaren Vale provide a sublime climate for this 2018 vintage; pronounced earthiness on the nose merges with the mouthwatering acidity of blackberries on the palate. Try pairing with comfort food like mushroom risotto or beef stew.
