La Bodega Beer Club

09/02/2020

All about your september beer club!

Shoulder Season Suds

September's Beer club is quite the juxtaposition. Ommegang's Apripêche strives to hold onto the last rays of Summer's sunshine while Turnagain's Imperial Stout gives us the bravery to charge forward into Fall.

Ommegang Apripêche

Omma-gonna love me some Ommegang

Ommegang has existed as a Belgian-style farmstead Brewery in Cooperstown, NY for the past 24 years. It was founded by Donald Feinberg, his wife Wendy Littlefield along with Belgian Breweries: Duvel, Scaldis, and Affligem. Donald also founded the Belgian Beer Importer Vanberg and Dewulf back in 1982. They were responsible for bringing gems such as Duvel and Dupont to the USA.

A blended beer with Belgian-style witbier as the base. Peaches bring lip-smacking juicy sweetness and Apricots add a little acidity. A measure of tart, Flemish golden ale is added for balance. Try pairing with sweet and savory tropical dishes or creamy cheeses like a baked brie with some fruit preserves on top.

Apripeche joins the year-round Ommegang lineup, which has evolved the past few years. They've also introduced a New England-style IPA, a Sour Ale aged on cherries, a Belgian-style Pilsner, and a mixed fermentation Golden Sour Ale.

Let's Talk Kveik

Kveik ("kay-vike"), you may have heard about this Norwegian Yeast for a couple of years now or maybe not. It hit the states back in 2015 and hasn't looked back. Its known for being able to ferment faster and at higher temperatures than other yeast strains and for creating fruity flavors. Turnagain Brewing has already been using it for some time with their Nordic Freestyle Kveik IPA.

A few months back, they decided to make an Imperial Stout. They tested various yeasts, including an Abbey, 001 West Coast Ale, and Kveik. The Kviek won their hearts and here we are.

This Imperial Stout is seemingly made to pair with a Beer Float. It's thick and sweet with a restrained roast character. We recommend the White Raven (Oreos and Sweet Cream) from Wild Scoops in a tulip glass with a few fresh raspberries on top.
